From yesterday, the fees charged to businesses on credit card transactions will be capped at 0.30%, well below the previous average charge of 0.85%. The debit card fees are now limited to 0.20% of the transaction value, which is just about at the previous average level of charges of 0.21%.

The Consumer Rights (Payment Surcharges) Regulations 2012 still allow a business to make a charge for credit or debit card payments; however, if the customer has to pay a surcharge for using the credit or debit card then that surcharge must not be higher than the cost the business has to pay for processing that method of payment.

Businesses may still also charge booking fees and administrative fees as long as these fees remain constant irrespective of the method of payment. For example, the booking fee will be £10 whether payment for the booking is paid by cash or by a credit card.

No doubt Trading Standards will shortly be swamped with claims that businesses are ripping-off customers by making unjustified and unfair charges for payment by credit cards, particularly where there are no charges for using debit cards.

Thanks for that John, that's good knowledge. I really object to paying credit cards fees after all, if the banks do away with cheques then the card will be the only way of distance shopping.

There is already evidence of banks reducing the reward rates on credit cards to help balance their books and the promotion of credit cards being accepted by small traders.

Ah Credit cards. Mine has just been cloned again for the third or fourth time (over quite a long period).
Eleven transactions put through on 1st December in a town in Brazil - three small amounts first, all under £2, then the rest totalling £2,700.

The phone call I received from the fraud team last Thursday evening at 08.30 was not very convincing.

It started by a well spoken lady asking for me by my Sunday name, preceded by Mr, so a formal start. She then told me she was from the B***** Fraud Team and that she needed to ask me some security questions before she could continue.
First question - "can you tell me your year of birth?"
This I declined - "I'm not prepared to tell you that" I said.
"OK lets try another - what are the last three digits of your phone number?" Obviously this was the number I was on and initially I thought this to be a stupid question. However, on accessing the website, and my details, only the last three digits of my phone number are shown, and I'm guessing that they have a "call customer" button so they can't access the whole phone number, which would make sense for security.
Final question - "do you have a middle name, yes or no"
I answered this because I couldn't see that it mattered.
Then we had a conversation which was sometimes vague, so when she rang of I felt that it could have been bogus.
Until I logged on......... Damn these Brazilians. I'm obviously subsidising the Olympics.

In the past I've been called by robot lady when transactions are being checked, but I haven't heard from robot lady for quite a while.

Ah, to think there's a little Brazilian running around with the name of DiegoW even as we speak, blagging bits of neoprene from across the internet..

My mum was scammed a few years ago & it terrified her, and Mrs SBM was cloned when she was daft enough to give her card to a foreign hotel receptionist in London, in order to 'photocopy' it in the adjoining room.

This last one we made some enquiries over and got the receptionists name, did some super sleuthing and rang the Police, who in turn didn't want to know. It's Police policy apparently, to simply hand everything over to the card issuer despite the obvious clear up rate.

No loss of money for us, but lots of faff & stress.

These Fraudsters are getting ever more skilled at extracting info from us all.

We all need to be ultra vigilant all the time - not an easy mission!

Quite a few car park scams going on around here.

When you return to your car and open it you are approached and told a wire is dangling down from the engine.

Whilst you look down at the front of the car an accomplice steals your shopping /purse.
