Depends where it's connected into the loom Dave! I have one on the '93, standard fit. Preferred the ammeter as was on the '76  Phil, all good advice above. I had problems with slow turnover on my '76. Cured with additional earth lead... '76 cars are great

The voltmeter in my 79 +8 seems to work well. I can tell if the fan, heater, lights, are activated by the gauge drop.
.+8 Now gone for a 1800 4/4. Duratec in bright yellow.

Have you tried getting the battery tested. The symptoms appear to be the same as a failed cell or cells in the battery. It's possible that a voltmeter may not detect the problem as it will not replicate the drain on the battery when the starter motor is engaged.

If you have a test meter and monitor the volts whilst someone cranks the engine if the battery is shot the meter will reflect this with a very low voltage i.e. less than 6 volts. You should have better than 9 volts cranking is my experience.
The dash voltmeter is reasonably accurate and indicates 14 volts when charging at 13.80 volts and descends proportionately with varying loads.

My standard fit voltmeter doesn't really move away from 12.5v.
But it looks nice.
My best ever gauge on a Midget was a vacuum gauge. Very watchable.

I would have though that on starting the gauge should briefly fall to around 11 volts and rise to 13-14 volts immediately on starting, and then settle back to 12.5 volts or so.

By the time the engine fires the gauge hasn't reached full travel. I'll watch more closely next time!

My guage barely clears 11 until I've been on the road for 15mns or so and then suddenly becomes very healthy. Curiously this has only happened since I changed to a Powerlte alternator.
