Hi there was a full page article in the farming section of yesterdays Daily Post( north wales/ liverpool paper )
It was about a campaign the farmers who farm on the Evo triangle for more policing of the speed limit and enforcement.
A number of farmers stating that it is not usual to be overtaken by cars travelling up to and over 100 mph!
There was a fatal accident last week at the narrow parts.
There is even talk of a blanket 50 mile per hour along the whole length.

I was a bit curious as to what the Evo Triangle was so I Googled it.

It certainly looks like a good driving road. It seems to be one of those roads where a 60 mph limit would seem to be reasonable but I can well imagine there are those who think they are on a race track and drive like idiots. It has always been one of my fears to find myself in a head on with one of these idiots who has lost control on a curve.

Similar problems have caused the lowering of the speed limit to 50 kph (heavily policed) on the Old Pacific Highway north of Sydney, and here at Lecco the speed limit on the tunnel under the city has been lowered from 90 kph to 70 kph. In both cases the limits are seldom respected as they are seen by most people to be unreasonable however those who used to go at a very high speed continue to do so and fatal accidents still occur.

The problem with the road in parts it is over open moorland. So there is no tree or hedge line to read the road.
The chevrons are on the tights bends but alot of them tighten up quick.
There are a number of Ferrari's and Astons that has written themselves off.
Having said that I had the pleasure of leading a group of Aeros around it a few years ago.

I think the problem is that in todays world everyone is informed of these places by a constant barrage of media.

The Welsh mountain roads were known to but a few in the 60s and 70s, remember the original +8 road test that was done there. Now a few words in a magazine article or two, everybody searches it for it , and soon it becomes "overcrowded" with wannabes who wish to ape their "heroes" but don't quite measure up on the skill stakes.

I am not advocating that we should go backwards to a previous era, but this is one of the unintended consequences of such a media savvy world.

Evo magazine unofficial testing triangle for their test cars many of which are Porsches , Ferrari's , Lambo's , basically supercars with one or two leaser cars . have been on this road in the 7 , great fun !

The problem is that a lot of drivers want to emulate the likes of Clarkson driving such roads....and much of TG driving is not quite what it seems, a lot of clever editing.
Sadly the north west Scottish route will probably go the same way.

Dartmoor has a 40mph speed limit, sadly you still get idiots who ignore it. With ponies, sheep and cattle roaming ......people and animals get hurt. 40 mph is great for seeing the ever changing moor and sky. In the Evo triangle, some of the roads I know well, I think 40 mph should be the limit over open moorland assuming animals are grazed up there.

May I add that though I see a lot of social engineering on our roads, some of which makes them more dangerous -long curves with the wrong camber, roundabouts planted so that one can't see across them- there are too many drivers who are not engaged, not thinking at all and need retraining. The pleasure to be gained from driving quickly comes from thinking and looking ahead. Some speed limits seem abitrary and there are times when I find myself exceeding them too and here I am thinking of a local road which has excellent sightlines, is about twenty miles in length through open country, and has a limit of 90kph ( agreed that this is the national speed limit for these kinds of roads)but there are other roads where I would not achieve this speed because there are too many potential hazards and so am being constantly overtaken by drivers who suddenly have to brake because of something that they didn't anticipate. I saw a driver recently plough through a group of farmyard ducks on a road through a village where he should have kept his speed below 50kph and where it was obvious that there were farm entrances and exits. Just my pennyworth.

I don't think the speed limit would deter the idiots. More policing might but do we have the human resources for this?

These numpties are exceeding a 60 limit are they really going to pay more attention to a lower one? It is not the speed that is the problem really it is speed in the wrong places or circumstances. The answer as ever is better driver training.
I wouldn't agree that open moorland with the possibility of animals should be a lower limit. A properly educated driver will be aware of the surroundings, observing what is happening around them, watching the road for tell tale signs and not hammering round bends faster than visibility permits.
It is irrelevant what the posted limit is driving to the conditions is what matters, it may well be lower than the limit.
