After 10 years of ownership I've decided to list my 1993 Rolex Explorer 2 white face watch for sale on Ebay
I listed it as an auction starting at .99p no reserve, it ends tomorrow and it's up to over £2,300 with 73 poeple watching it
Because new Rolex's have more than doubled in price since 2005 when I bought it second hand for £1700, second hand prices also seem to have doubled
I do really like the watch but with my reading eyesight fading fast and because it no longer has any lume on the hands or dials, it is hardly a 'tool watch' anymore to me
Plus to have somthing so valuable on my wrist just getting banged and scraped messing with the Morgan, I'm thinking I could use the funds for other things
I have two other watches, a vintage gold Longines dress watch and a 12 year old Zenith Elite Hand Wound in 18 ct gold with an rather nice alligator strap both of which again are too nice to wear on a daily basis as I'm always tinkering with something and they are just going to get ruined
I banged the Longines this afternoon trying to tuck the tonneau cover under the hood on the Morgan which made me think how vulnerable they are
So I need to get a stainless steel watch that I can wear all the time but as I'm a fussy chap it has to fulfill all of these criteria
1. Stainless steel
2. Has to have some sort of vintage style about it - no modern monstrosities
3. No date or complications - as I couldn't read them without my glasses on
4. Has to have a strong nighttime luminosity - superluminova or new tritium tubes
5. Mechanical not Quartz - only because I'm a bit of a watch snob and I like things mechanical and will happily suffer poor timekeeping rather then have a Quartz watch movement which can cost as little as 10 pence to make
6. Not so expensive that I have to fork out a small fortune
7. Morgan friendly so that it isn't going to get ruined every time I have to sort the hood or tonneau cover or some other piece of regular fiddling that all us Morgan owners have to do - I don't want to have to take the watch off every time
As I know many of you are watch buffs
Any ideas chaps?

Rolex Sumbmariner all the way...mine is 25 years old ...never off my wrist even when welding..crystal glass face..wash with warm soapy water..looks like new!!
Drive over to The Old Watch Shop at Southport,nice guy..bought many items off him..4500 pounds get you a watch for life.
I need a drink !!!!!

IWC Mark XV or XVII, Pilots Watch.
Good preowned ones on the market for some € 3000,--
An IWC Portofino would be perfect too
Or you go for a Tudor - closely related to your former Rolex.
When it comes to useless things like mechanical wristwatches it's getting strange (like owning and driving a Morgan): A cheap Swatch is much more practical than all the mechanical stuff - but it's only a Swatch...

To point you to something not so well known maybe, how about a nice german watch from Glashütte or, as an example from the once famous watchmakers from the Pforzheim area: Laco have a look. Regards. beltempo

Yes I do like the Sub no date but the older ones still have a bezel insert that I know I will scratch I've also been looking at the Tudor Heritage Black Bay and the Ranger The Ranger is probably the best - nice clear legible watch face and similar to the older Rolex Explorer 1's but there is just something about the watch face that looks a bit cheap Also been looking at the new Rolex releases from this years Baselworld - the new Airking and the new Explorer 1 look pretty good and simple I like the green detail on the new Air-King and the full Chromalight dial on the Explorer Mmmmm Thinking!

I know what you mean Austrian and I agree the idea of having a mechanical wristwatch now is a anachronism as I am more tied to my mobile phone
But not having a little piece of beautiful precision engineering on the wrist is a difficult thing to give up
