In the vice Tim, and work it hard. Like pulling a recalcitrant cork out of a large bottle. It's just held by the tight fit.

I use a wooden two eared spinner spanner and a 2lb lump hammer, works every time

I've been able to tidy up a few of the hide faces on a normal bench grinder if they are not too badly mullered. Stinks the place out though.

I've also made a couple of replacement brass faces on my lathe, for when you need something harder than copper but softer than steel.

For Morgan wheel changing purposes, I have a lead hammer - came from a retired fitter in an explosives factory (the idea is you can belt the living daylights out of something without risking a spark)

"Mullered" - love it! In this case, the hide face of my Thor is well and truly mullered. Replacement is the only sensible course in this case, I think.

Yep, I've got one of those too, inherited from my father in law. Goodness only knows how he got hold of it, he was a chainsaw manufacturer, never went near any explosives in his life.

For the Morgan wheels I usually use the standard factory wheel hammer with a lump of old hardwood door frame betwixt spinner and hammer.

As mentioned a few days ago, today I took delivery of a Thor dead blow nylon hammer.

I did some research as there are several weights.
I started with the standard Thor spec. These are the ones with a copper surface on one side and a coiled leather surface on the other.
#1 size is 710gm
#2 size is 1070gm
#3 size is 1600gm
I have all three and #3 is really at the useable limit for swinging. For me anyway!

The dead blows come in the following sizes, with two replaceable nylon surfaces.
#1010 is 525gm (1lb)
#1212 is 700gm (1.75lb)
#1414 is 900gm (2lb)
#1616 is 1250gm (2.75lb)
#2020 is 2250gm (4.25lb)
There may well be a #1818 but I didn't come across this size.

I have gone for the #1616 because it falls between the weights of the standard #2 & #3. I think I got this right. It's big but manageable. The biggest size would have been too unwieldy. Keith at BHM uses one, but his is smaller than #1616.

At the same time I bought a replacement coiled leather refill for my Thor #2 which is "well used". It took some persuasion to get the old one out, and the new one had to be pressed in like a kingpin bush. It's a tight fit, eased with a smear of Vaseline. (Another use).

Oh no! Not more hammers beating the living daylights out of eared spinners. People should be arrested for GBH. I know I wouldn't like to be hit by a hammer. Poor spinner. I prefer to use a long handle tool available from MGOC and other places! Much easier all round and a more accurate method of uniform tightening on all four wheels.

The Thor hammer with the nylon inserts is brilliant and non damaging to the spinner. Keith at BHM advised me to use one as it does the job as required and when it reaches the end of its usable life, the striking ends just in screw for replacement. Simples!!

Triple eared spinners have more places to hit........

Although I've left my Roadster on Continentals and use the Ledgerwood tool.

I carry a hard wood dolly in the car. It is cylindrical, 2.5 inches diameter and about 7 inches long. Place the end on the spinners ear and belt the hell out of the free end of the dolly. No fear of hitting the bodywork in this method.
