I think the battery is on the way out, the volt meter now shows c 11.5 V when running & starting from warm is sluggish. It is I guess the original so 10 years old.
Any advice what to buy? Red top Optima's seems 3 times the going rate, are they worth it.

When running the alternator should be giving 13-14 volts regardless of the condition of the battery. If it is faulty your battery may not be fully charging. The battery standing battery voltage should be about 12.5 volts and should not drop below 10 volts when the starter is cranked. Try charging the battery up with a charger and see how it performs.

John, I'd have brought a test meter with me today had I known. I'd recommend checking directly at the battery - engine off and running. The fitted dash voltmeter can give erroneous readings as the take off point is not close to battery/alternator.

That's low. I presume it's a dry cell? Nominal lead acid for most of charge/discharge cycle should be 13.2V (2.2V per cell). When new('ish) at full charge you should see around 13.8V fully charged... HTH
