Has anyone noticed that the new 4/4, +4 & Roadster no longer have a galvanised steel chassis. The new chassis are given an autophoretic coating, which I understand is latex polymer based.

Yes it follows on from the ARP4. There are strong concerns posted on the forum.

One dealer who I won't name said the ARP4 they had in already had chipped paint on the chassis.

I am not sure it is a forward step.

I knew the ARP4 had a red coated chassis but wasn't aware that the other models had been switched to a black coated version until a recent visit to the factory.

During my factory visit towards the end of last year I saw the ARP4 being built with the red chassis.
Then there was a discussion on the forum about why Morgan had changed from a Galvanized chassis. If I remember correctly there were two main reasons given, the first because the new system is lighter and secondly because galvanizing the chassis causes distortion.
I think both are plausible reasons but something keeps telling me its all down to cost, I figure Galvanizing costs a lot more and its all about bottom line.

I would guess that it’s the 800 series autophoretic coating that is being used. Perhaps attractive from accountant’s perspective but not so much for an engineer.

The distortion argument doesn’t hold water for me. The chassis is of a very simplistic design and would not be prone to the extent of distortion as say a boxed section Land Rover chassis might be. Anyway there has been nearly two a decades to perfect the process. Also the extra weight of the zinc is quite insignificant.

The good news is that it should help bolster the value of galvanised cars smile

Apologies all - I have now located the thread that Jays started on 27th November last year (here in case anyone else missed it http://www.talkmorgan.com/ubbthreads.php/topics/322075/Galvanised_chassis#Post322075).

It just goes to show what happens when I was sunning myself in the Caribbean instead of keeping my eye on the TM forum.
