It is utterly futile and quite possibly foolhardy, to aggressively attempt to correct or punish a boorish, impatient or incompetent driver while in traffic. Given the steadily increasing occurrences of road rage confrontations, especially noteworthy here in North America, has also significantly contributed in forming my present-day attitude towards the matter. Best to take note of number plate and make a complaint
if you feel the situation warrants it.

Unfortunately it seems to be a symptom of modern fast paced life, where people feel under pressure to max out their time and get from A to B as quickly as possible. Luckily I have not had this for a while, since putting some very bright led replacements tail/brakelights in the Roadster people seem to keep back more. I put the in my new car as soon as I got home yesterday. I also have got into the habit of driving with side lights on.

I stop and wave them past. Life's too short to let tailgaters spoil it for me.

Judging by the lights it always amazes me how many people drive on their brakes. Not much careful revs-matched engine braking anymore. And stationary at, say, traffic lights everyone constantly has their foot on the brake. I'm told that's the way they are taught to drive nowadays.

As for hand signals, we have a particularly vicious speed hump in a village near us. Approaching it the other day with a car close behind me I gave a clear slowing down hand signal - only to receive an angry blast from the horn. He completely misunderstood the courtesy I was offering and (I think) thought I was indicating for him to slow down.

When 3 of us left the SS Great Britain meeting last week we went down to Cheddar Gorge, the drive through the Gorge and in a few other places was plagued by drivers who not only braked for each and every bend but also when they saw a car coming in the other direction. We were not speeding, or rushing but 20MPH in a 50MPH section and so timid that they almost stop at junctions until there is no other car in sight (I think one in particular was waiting for a written permit to proceed) is mighty frustrating. Some are so slow I actually think they contribute to accidents as they frustrate drivers to overtake them. I did comment that maybe a Saturday is when less experienced drivers are having a drive?

Many drivers just do not realise they are driving too close. I had experience of this a while ago, when after having a builders 1 ton pickup following me for a few miles, in a 30 limit, where I was doing an indicated 35, we had to stop at road work lights, so I took the opportunity to hop out and, politely, ask him why he was driving so close, he answered "was I, I didn't notice?". What can you do with people like that?

I think it is the same mentality which causes people to park ridiculously close to you in e.g. a supermarket car park when you have taken the time to park in a totally deserted part of the park.

I think some drivers are so unsure of themselves and their abilities that they need to 'line' up their car with yours when parking or tailgate you , as above , on the roads - it saves them having to calculate the necessary responses themselves....

We have a 'titchy' little Smart car which we use a lot in and around the City.It is surprisingly nippy (Brabus tuned and a turbocharger on all off 700c.c. ) but other drivers still feel the need to sit on our rear bumper
