I wonder if anyone here can help,
Last week I made a rash decision and added a 1952 mk 6 Bentley to the Morgan garage, it has had a good life and well looked after up until 10 years ago from which it has travelled approx 500 miles, I have used it for a week but it was running lumpy, today it has been tuned and serviced and runs lovely and smooth but it now breaths very heavy from the engine vent, much more than before, question is can a tune cause extra engine venting ?.. It was running very rich before, now seems to run on correct mixture but runs a few degrees hotter .

Temperature increase would suggest weak mixture.
The increase in breathing suggest someone messing about with oil breather tubes or a breather mesh filter missing.
Lets assume no more piston blowbye that previous to the tune up.

If it wasn't doing it before the service then I'd go through the basics that may have been altered. Retarded ignition will also give higher temperatures too.. Check vent pipes as anything kinked or blocked will increase crank pressure and blow by ending up as heavy breathing.

I owned a Bentley 'R' Type 1954. Even a Leak Down test did not indicate problems (not so sure mechanic knew how to do a leak down test). In any event when taken apart just about all the piston rings were broken. Bentley/Rolls install a stainles something liner in the top of the cylinders. With mileage the cylinders turn into an hour glass breaking the piston rings. A good Bentley Mechanic can help You. Suggest talking to Norman Gleeson (English) and well known and get some guidance. He helped Me.

Broken rings would certainly cause heavy breathing but it ought to have been noticeable the week you used it before it was serviced.. But Button is right to suggest talking to someone that knows these engines well, certainly before pulling it all down.

Good for you Alan, a brave decision and a motor car I have always fancied owning but never been rash enough. The later 'big bore' models like yours seem to be the ones to go for - a proper top quality motor car! Hope you get it sorted out and good luck.

What a beautiful car Alan. Perhaps now that its running hotter and leaner it has just had a chance to burn off some carbon.

Expert said use it for a 1000 miles it may improve as its not been used for so long, but in my experience I have never known improvement , if I need an engine rebuild will need to sell house.

I spent $10,000. Lower end did not need machining but did need cleaning. 150 fasteners in the crank shaft alone. says Machinist. I did not recoup when I sold the Bentley. We did have several elegant trips to Banff, Alberta, Canada, and Sun Valley, Idaho. 11MPG US gallon. My Wife loved it. I hated it.
