I'm certainly open to suggestions for alternative sizes that will fit on my rims and retain the original circumference, is there any issues with fouling the wings with wider rubber?

I did find longstoneon the web earlier, but I'm in West Midlands!

Just found a couple of tyre size converters on the web, and 195/65r15 looks to be close to the original circumference, but that gives me 30 more mm to the tyre - can anyone tell me if this is going to cause problems for me?

I run Avon CR6ZZ's on the +4 Falt Rad, and on my '72 4/4.

These are IMO the best tyre you can get in a 70 profile, they offer fantastic amounts of grip in all weather conditions.

I'm run 175/70 R 15's on the standard 5 inch wide wires, there a wee bit wider (10mm) than the 165's on your car at the moment but you won't notice the diffrence, and there are no issues with rubbing ect, and my 4/4 is running an inch lower at the back and 2 inches lower at the front.

They come in two diffrent compounds, soft and very bloody soft (sport).

If you don't use your car a lot ie 5000 miles a year or less and don't take if on the track, then go for the soft (sport) compound.

If you do a lot of miles in your car or take it on the track I would go for the "harder" of the two, as the soft (sport) compound will last for about 10 laps before you need a new set of tyres.

The tread pattern looks like it should be rubbish in the rain but they are fantastic in the wet, lots of the drivers in the Masters Historic Race Series use the CR6ZZ as there choice of rain tyre.

Be warned there not cheap, if you shop around you can get a good price (I get mine from Brian Gateson at Techniques, http://www.techniques.uk.com/mainframe.html ) , I can never understand the concept of buying a "sports car" and putting the cheapest crap tyres on you can find, you might as well buy a crap car in the first place.

One final note, if you plan on doing any trials in the Mog then get the firestone F560's as the Avons are rubbish off road.

Thanks for your tips chaps, I'm hoping to get the tyres sorted this week, would it be necessary/sensible to replace tubes and the wheel tape stuff that longstones are suggesting?

My 2005 4/4 had a very unworn set of Continental 165/80x15 on when I bought it in Oct 07 at 2.5 years old and 2500 miles. I changed the wheels to stainless in Mar 08 and it was easier to get new tyres - my local source recommended the Firestone F560s and I was absolutely amazed how much better they were than the Continentals, which at that age were hardly likely to have aged/hardened much. The F560s have far more grip in both dry and wet conditions, and less squeal on cornering or braking. My impression is they have a softer compound. I have not come across a situation in which I felt I needed better (or wider) tyres.

I have tried them at 18 psi and find that a bit soft so am running at 21psi. This is with AVO dampers on the softest setting.

I just bought a set of Vredestein Sprint Classic in size 165R15 for my 1995 4/4. I have the same tires on my TR4a and am ha[ppy with them. I bought mine in the US, but they should be available in the UK as well. John

I had Uniroyal 550 Rain tyres on my previous car, a 1996 4/4. I found they had brilliant grip in the wet - notably at the track day at Castle Coombe during the centenary. I would really recommend them - they were great in the dry too!

So, I eventually ended up at mike Duncans and got some conti's put on, the transformation is huge, the car is significantly smoother, and feels more secure.
