I have a few grills that have seen their share of road debris, rocks and bugs. In other words, the Chrome is shot.

I can either buy new (at great cost) or re-chrome the old ones.

Has anyone had any experience with re-chroming these things??

You can rechrome virtually anything!

I have had a lot of chrome replated over the years ...for my bikes !

Choose a specialist classic Car rechromer ...near where u live ..and bingo!

Finding a plating specialist in the US is getting quite difficult. Too many work safety and health regulations so most have all gone out of business. I do know one a few hours away however. Caters to the hot rod crowd. I may take a road trip to see what re chroming a grill will cost me.

If I can find a cost like that (current exchange rates being what they are) I will definitely go the re-chrome route. Buying new is more than twice that price. Yikes!! And all that for bling . . .

I buy new stainless grills from "Heart Of England". Great quality. I also have a "How To Repair" a grill by Ron Garner. Not sure if it is also posted on "Mad About Morgans" or not.

Paid that for mine three years ago.

Re-chroming will only work where the raw product is good underneath the old chrome to start with.
If there's still excessive pitting to the material after the old chrome has been removed then the new chrome won't hide it.

Preparation is evertthing.

Platers & metal finishers are hard to come by now but I got lucky this week requiring some new top hat head bolt plating. - x10 small items £25

Thankfully, non-stainless steel Morgan grills are made from brass and so a sound base to re-chrome. Unfortunately, the chroming was often poor and lost its depth of lustre
rather quickly.

I had mine re-chromed decades ago and have another one from my project car that I've re-soldered a couple of loose vertical bars and is now awaiting re-chroming.

Both of my cowled rad cars have less than shiny grills, and then there is a third grill on the wall in my garage. Oddly enough the garage wall grill is the best of them all.

I am reluctant to buy new as my retirement budget for auto parts is limited (or so I think my wife tells me).

I think a trip to the metal platers, with the one off the wall, is appropriate to get an estimate. If good, I'll leave it at the metal platers and come home and mail off the other two.
