I'd like to put the car on axle stands in the garage while I do some work, what are the safe points to use?

The official lifting points are at the front the lower cross tube. At the rear the rear crossmember right at the back.
On a four point lift, dealers seem to use the bulkhead corners at the front where there is a triangular chassis section. At the ear they use the big crossmember which houses the front hangers of the rear springs.
I use lifting beams front & rear so lift one end at a time centrally - axle stands under the front lower cross tube.
At the rear I leave the beam in place and put an axle stand at each end.
But Alternatively I used wood blocks under each wheel.
Be very careful when you lift each end because a trolley jack can cause the car to move forward/backwards and it could come off the stands very easily.

Be very careful when you lift each end because a trolley jack can cause the car to move forward/backwards and it could come off the stands very easily.
This is a very important point. You want your trolley jack to move rather than the car when lifting the second end. Make sure the trolley jack is longitudinal with the car and free to roll on the floor. I sometimes used a sheet of ply on the floor to provide a smooth surface for the jack. The bigger the trolley jack, the less pronounced this effect is, as the radius of the arc through which the lifting pad moves is greater.

I recently jacked up a 2005 Roadster from the back. Too high and it rolled off the jack, damaging the "Vapor Canister" $400US. I would jack each end a bit and place jack stand then jack the other end a bit and place jack stand. I am also retiring as a "Back Yard Mechanic" trying to help others. Obviously I am not qualified.
