The road trip to the Melbourne Plating shop occurred this morning. We lost one of our band of Morgans to a 'bug' caught on a recent long distance airplane trip, so we were down to three. A good day, weather wise, and good Florida roads. Some back roads, farms and wet lands, and some high speed highway sprints. Good stuff.
The plating shop was a bit industrial (I don't know what I was expecting?) but we had a tour, spoke with the owner and all the employees were very proud of their skills and products. We left a set of alloy bumpers and a grill for plating. The prices were competitive, if not a bit lower, than the cost of replacement parts. The quality of what we could see in the shop, appeared quite good, but I will report back on the quality of the bits we left today.
The road trip was followed by a great lunch in Winter Park Fl. Not a bad day . . . for a Tuesday.

From my experience of plating shops, they are not the best of places for a group tour. But it sounds like you had a great day out with the all important lunch.

I agree!
Open tanks, somelead lined, full of many nasties.
Parts hanging from busbars.
As a metallurgist I loved the one I did.
Fascinating to see the prep of parts,plating, etc. With different coatings.
I would have loved to see the non metalluc coatings process but that was in Gloucester not Cardiff where the metal plating was done.

Yes, a dusty, dirty and toxic environment with two sides, one for automobile trim bits and large, ornate american car bumpers, and other for smaller Motorcycle trim.
The bronze color of the copper plate prior to nickel and chrome was very pretty. They finish and polish the pieces in the copper state, then leave the chrome alone after the part is dipped.
The shop wouldn't have handled many more than what we had as it was crowded, with lots of sharp pipes and other dangers lurking. But, it was good. Any excuse for a road trip.
Finding the time and herding the cats is never easy so quite happy we pulled it off.
