Choose somewhere very scenic for a first trip - that way if the slow pace is off putting you will have plenty to see. The Llangollen Canal is a great first time trip but avoid school holidays when it gets very busy.
Also, do some research on the route you will take - some of the circular routes you will see advertised can be a bit lengthy for a relaxing holiday.
There was a Narrow Boat in our family from 1972 to 2012 when my parents (at 80) sold their 55' NB - a major lifestyle change for them - their pattern for the previous 20 years had been to set off in April and return home in October. My dad fitted out two boats from scratch - my brother and I helped with the first one. If anyone sees a boat called Basford, it would be nice to know that it is in good hands now.

I helped pull one round today.....it's a very tight turn from the exit of the Llangollen canal into the basin just before the aqueduct. There's an indentation in the stone edge to the canal where two centuries of narrow boats have attempted to turn. They are bloody heavy to pull round on a rope! And before anyone asks....no I'm not boating....it was a rather pleasant date!

came in y/day with a load of holiday stuff on canal boats . After a read of them she informs me you only go along the canal and at very slow pace ( I knew what was coming ) . What do you think ! trying to get me to say I don't wish to go so its not her. Crafty these women . Tell the truth love you dont want to go now do you . Married in 1983 and I am still trying to work her out. Wonder if she fancies a dirty w/end in the garage instead .Now she is trying to get me to come up with a romantic week away , how can it be romantic when I have to leave my mistress in the garage .

Mother in law keeps a canal boat near Telford, some nice pub gardens accessed from the canals around there. A few years ago we hired one on the Canal Du Midi (nice and warm) but apart from Carcassonne everywhere else is a bit of a trek from moorings.
