Anyone out there tried one yet? The quality, the look and the feel are fabulous.

My Caberg Riviera is great value but just doesn't fit me well enough to be comfortable for more than half an hour or so. Tried on a couple of Davida's because I also find the look more appropriate to the M3W, but boy were they uncomfortable from the minute I put them on. The guy in the bike shop was great but had to concede they weren't for me. Just my particular head shape I'm sure.

Then I came across the Hedonist and Epicurist. Love at first site, but I want to get it right as they are more of an outlay than the Caberg. Hence any opinions out there would be much appreciated.

I cannot comment on Hedon Helmets as I have never tried one let alone owned one. But after wearing helmets for 40+ years one thing I have learned is that out of the criteria you listed I would order them in: Fit/Feel, Quality and then Looks.

Head shape is vitally important and I have found that some brands just don't suit my head shape at all (and if they don't fit properly the build quality and looks become irrelevant). Labelled Sizing is also a bit of a mystery as it varies from manufacturer to manufacturer (perhaps that shouldn't be a surprise!). Over the years I have tried Kangol, Bell, Arai, Shoei and BMW as well as other less well known makes. Bell and Arai suit my head best and so I tend to stick with them, although like so many other things it is often the style and paintwork that attract in the first instance - and IMHO this is the wrong starting point!

I totally agree that some styles are more appropriate for certain types of vehicle, but whatever the style, the helmet should fit your head properly, otherwise it will become uncomfortable and have the potential to do more harm than good. A good motorsports shop will allow you to try the full range and offer advice on whether or not the fit is right for you. And like shoes.....reduce the choice to two or three helmets and then wear each one for at least 15-20 minutes around the shop to see how it feels.

One thing worth noting is that helmets do give after a little wear and it is a fine line between getting one that is too tight (with resultant headaches) and so slack that it moves at speed (my open face BMW helmet is the 'Bees Knees' in quality and looks but is just too loose at anything over 60 mph on a motorcycle. A snug but not tight fit with no pressure points is what I look for, preferably in the style and with the functions you require. Colour schemes can be changed easily enough so not really a massive issue. Weight also varies though not so much that I have ever noticed the differences in use.

One other thought: decide on what you want to use the helmet for.....if I remember correctly for track use the helmet needs to be approved/certified at a defined standard and have a certain type of fastening (D Rings as opposed to clips etc) - but do check as I may well be out of date on current regulations. And check with goggles if you intend to use them.....some goggles just don't fit well on some helmets.

So easy to fall into the traps you mention. Totally agree with your point about fit above all else, particularly, if like me, you've never ridden a bike and therefore had no previous experience of buying a helmet.

That said, I would still value any and all opinions from those who own a Hedon, before I get stuck in to the fitting game. They are just so lovely...

Got to grips with the Hedon Hedonist at my most local dealer in Dorset. A great guy and a great product, and Muck, it fits me like a glove so I have one in my colour choice on order. Your advice was much appreciated.

I have used helmets for the last 12 years on my road legal Yamaha Raptor 700cc sports quad bike in France. For the first 11 years I used Arai helmets, which I knew were very safe. When I went to get a new helmet last year (I change them every five years), I went to Helmet City in Tatsfield, Surrey (quite near the M25 near Biggin Hill). They had a huge range to choose from. I went for a Shoei J Cruise open face helmet in the end. It fitted very well, had an excellent positive strap attachment rather than a thread through strap. You know that it is going to be of top class quality as a Shoei but the best feature of all, is that it has a built in internal flick down sun half visor, as well as the standard clear bubble visor. I use this for long journeys in the Morgan but leave the bubble visor at home. You can get it with built in earphones if you want these. I do have an intercom system on my M3W which you can plug a music player into but I never use it.

Wear a J-Cruise on my BMW R9T. Wear a cap in my M3W.
