I've seen an M3W with a white rear light immediately above the two normal rear lights. The parts diagram refers to both fog and reversing lights although in same low down position. The wiring loom shows a reversing light switch connection presumably to gearbox.

Question is then, has anyone retro-fitted a reversing light and how much is the wiring already integrated to power such?

Further investigation suggests the Australian version has a reversing light low down to replace the fog light (no fog in Australia?), with a second brake light on pedestal just in front of filler cap.

Perhaps someone with the Oz version can confirm this and explain what if anything the far left switch (fog light in UK versions) does.

What I'm aiming for is a reversing light in pod (same as indicator) mounted on top of double rear light, although may then reverse locations and place fog light in this higher position. I need therefore to find source of pod and white LED light - any suggestions other than MMC?

Richard on the rare occasions I need to reverse in the dark the foglight does the job for me.

Thanks Tim. Although my garage is remote with little local lighting, it was the need to complete the rear lighting that spurs me on. After all the wiring and g/box reverse switch are already present.

Will report back when I've checked out power feeds.

Yes on the face of it this 55mm one would seem ideal

but for the price - £117.60

So have searched further and found this Hella single LED one at a more comfortable £54.00.

Just awaiting confirmation of dimensions. As can be seen both are dedicated reversing lights employing high power LED(s) with heat sinks.

Intend for this to replace the rear fog light which will be relocated when suitable pod can be found.

According to statements of my dealer, the MX5 trans is equipped with the necessary reverse gear electric contact to switch a reverse light.

Yes and have visually confirmed the switch is connected to wiring loom on my UK spec car. Am now mildly optimistic that a live reversing light connection will be available at the four wire rear light connector, since colour codes match from switch. Next stage will be to remove the rear dirt cover.

ETA: dimensions confirmed as those of existing rear fog light so reversing lamp ordered from SVC
