Yup, it's great if you're working in business, and especially if you are a contractor, consultant, or looking for a new position. But for anyone who isn't in one of those categories, I would think it would be almost entirely irrelevant. For social communication, Facebook is a much better proposition.

I use it a lot. I don't connect to people I don't know hence I'm not in the 500+ club that many people are who seem to connect as if playing tick. I do find it useful to research people and also to see if anybody I know is connected to somebody I need to connect to so has some uses. I don't pay for the paid version. It is a business tool and is useful for that purpose.

To sum it all up, would I be correct in thinking you use it to connect to someone to either sell them what you're doing or producing, with a view to either getting them as a customer, or obtaining something that they do that may be useful for you?

Or as a cross referencing CV tool, or a way of advertising your trade.

I've been on it for over five years and it's produced nothing for me because I'm not selling something. I just wanted to know if it's genuinely useful, which it is for some but not for others.

Sometimes people can just be a contact as they may be useful for information or opinions. I've met a couple of people today who I have no need for their service today but in both cases they could be useful a few months down the line as the business develops.

My problem these days is that my memory seems so overloaded I can never find their details through the old fashioned ways but at least I've a chance in finding them on LinkedIn!

To be honest, I find the biggest drawback of LinkedIn is that I get quite a lot of headhunters/recruiters contacting me with an interesting opportunity, invariably just after I've signed an exclusive contract with someone else!

I hate the fact that every time someone joins they harvest all the email addresses in their address book and who knows where they actually finish up. I am getting an increasing amount of spam on one of my email accounts. I will probably soon cancel that address.

I find it quite useful for catching up with colleagues of old.
