My main tip for avoiding leaks is to put a 'shower cap' on the car. I would endorse that. I use the tailor-made one from Brands Hatch Morgan (which folds back into an attached small bag) and it has proved effective (on a trad) in very heavy rain. I tend to use it when the car is left overnight in doubtful weather with just a tonneau cover in place.
