Although I am assured that I have a 12v socket on my 2000 4/4 I cannot find it. Is it me not looking properly or did some models not have one? Brian

As Ken says, there should be a cigar lighter in the glove box. I replaced mine for a more secure type to power sat-nav. http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/p/car-ac...p;0&cc5_826

I seem to recall that you are correct, the later cars have the socket under the dash. When I had my first car, I had to be shown (by a Hopmog member) where the reset button for the display was, that was a little black button under the dash. They keep moving things, just like Wesley on Last of the Summer Wine.
Here for a good time not a long time!! Reg

I couldn't find the 12v socket in my 8....
Try looking under the dash, passenger side, towards the transmission tunnel. It possibly has a black rubberised cover on it.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, I've given up! I'm about to fit a marine socket on the rear bulkhead above the transmission tunnel. If I ever find the original I'll have 2 sockets!

I don't like the glovebox option as they are always live & I worry about a short.

Fitting a marine socket is probably the best option!

I added one to the side of the heater and on the underside of the bulkhead. This allows me to run the leads to satnav / phone through the back of the glove box and out of sight.

There are ones that are temporary that you connect directly to the battery and have the socket come forward into the cockpit. Useful for those that don't want a permanent installation or for those that need it only on longer trips for GPS or phone. https://www.amazon.com/NOCO-GC018-Socket...ords=12V+socket Cheers,

Of course when my 1992 plus 4 was built people were not gadget mad. I fitted a 12v socket to the rear bulkhead directly from the battery but put in an inline fuse. From this socket I can run sat nav or what ever but also connect my battery conditioner.

In my previous car , a 4/4, there wasn not one fitted. I fitted one behind the dash screwed to the ash frame on left hand (passenger) side. I used the feed for a radio ( none in the car! ). An inline fuse put in too. A pretty simple job. On my current ( no pun intended!) car there is one in the glovebox. I intend replacing it with one under the dash as it is more accessible then. It will have a usb socket as well.

Mine is just in front of the hand brake so not very useful when the sat nav is plugged in ...

Mine is in front of the handbrake as well so not ideal for the sat nav as Peter says, my 2004 was on the inside right hand side of the the glovebox but well hidden and used to vibrate loose often at incredibly inconvenient times, losing the power on an autoroute without noticing until I missed the junction was one of the most memorable, and my 1981 didn't bother with such modern innovations.

Madmotorist, Mine is on the bulkhead, probably installed by a previous keeper, works a treat in that location.

Not specifically marine but the Hella/DIN style sockets are superior in both design and current handling, having a captive connection to centre positive pole. Surface as well as panel mount sockets as below are available. ![[Linked Image]](https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/08cAAOSwhcJWM0k5/s-l1600.jpg) Cigar lighter sockets were never designed as an external power source although sadly adopted by the electrical accessory world

A good brand to look out for is Blue Seas systems for 12V cig lighter style sockets or USB outlets, fully marine spec, not sure who the agent is in the UK though.

I think the Blue Seas offerings are the same or at least similar to the Hella/DIN ones I illustrated, the sockets of which have a waterproof cap when not in use. There is a matching adaptable plug available that allows use of the awful cigar lighter sockets as well, shown below. ![[Linked Image]](https://16.cdn.ekm.net/ekmps/shops/altecshop/images/12mm-cigar-lighter-plug-to-fit-hella-bosch-socket-din-iso-4165-alt-p721-303-p.jpg)

![[Linked Image]](https://tm-img.com/images/2021/07/30/IMG_2357.md.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](https://tm-img.com/images/2021/07/30/IMG_2359-2.md.jpg) Here is my trippel 12V socket solution. I located the wiring for the glovebox socket and connected the 3-socket console to these wires.Very practical for sat-nav+ charging of 2 cellphones. The console is simply glued to a piece of plywood wedged in place under the radio
