Afternoon all, I was wondering if when the engine is in idle and out of gear does their drivetrain rattle, and as soon as the clutch is depressed it goes away?

It's not a horrid rattle, just suspect I am becoming more sensitive to all things, and sounds the M3W is producing.

The old style compensator would do this but the Centa unit seems to behave far better.

Which do you have, and if you don't know, what year is your car?

What's your mileage? Who cares. Is it practical? See #1. What happens when it rains? You get wet.

My first compensator rattled like a biscuit tin half full of nuts and bolts, mk2 doesn't rattle at all.

Mine does with new compesator.
Is it not the layshaft in the gearbox that rattles somewhat. It has done it since new.

That'll be the old compensator unless it's been upgraded since 2014 with the Centra version.

Almost certainly the source of your rattle.

I was told it had the major upgrades done by the last owner, I had a poke round a moment ago, quite literally, there’s a 25mm hole in the casing, and when I had a feel about, my finger looked like this…

It came out of that hole.

That is not a conclusive test unfortunately. The blue gloop is the grease used to pack the Mk1.5 compensators, which I suspect your car either had, or still has. If the former, then there's every chance that the fitter of the new Centra compensator failed to clean the housing properly. If the latter, then you may need to investigate further I'm afraid.

back on page 16 is my post where we replaced the original Harley Davidson type of mechanical compensator for the newer Centra rubberized unit that uses no grease.

Plenty of pictures too.
