...our neighbours sometimes used to take their kids all of 1/4 mile to school in their BMW X5 (usually when raining to give them a modicum of credit). The thing is, they have just bought an electric car, and they used it this morning for said school run without a cloud in the sky. It could be the excitement of the new car, but what if the slightest sense of guilt they might have had about driving 1/4 mile in a huge 4x4 is now replaced by misplaced zero emissions complacency ? As if the traffic isn't bad enough already, will the roads soon be clogged up with electric cars 'just popping down the road' without any need to consider the cost and consequences of hydrocarbon fuel ? (and yes I know the emissions just appear somewhere else, but do the people driving them realise this ?). I'm not a bearded lefty environmentalist, I just don't want my road space invaded by these people ! EV3 drivers excluded of course !

Mmmm...food for thought indeed. And talking of food then everyone can happily pile on the pounds whilst whizzing around in their new 'green' motors.

A massive rise in electricity bills will discourage this in the Brave New World.

People are just lazy & dont consider environmental impact, witness the number sitting waiting with the engine running.
Yesterday there was an X3 driver at the supermarket parked as close as possible to the entrance outside the marked bays who loaded up then just abandoned the trolly.
A few years ago at the Bannockburn car park I saw a driver get in start up & drive 50 yards to get closer to the visitor centre.

Well at least the car won't wake you up, the screaming ankle biters are a different story.

Now i have to speak. When i was at secondary school i walked about 2 miles to school every morning, then home for lunch, back to school and then home at the end of school day, 5 days a week, all school terms, nothing missed (including sun, rain, snow, fog (smog) etc. So why is this "car to school" necessary???

Me too. Funny thing is, no umbrella - think of the piss taking you'd get at school with a brolly. But I have no memory of ever getting wet. How odd.

It's what we all did then but as Dave says you didn't notice the rain then either.

I remember walking over a mile to primary school and back again. Then Dad would thrash us to death.
