Hi Fox terrier, if it aint doing it it's fine, apparently there are some out there that are OK, don't know why some are ok and some not, it's a Morgan!

Hi Peter,
I can live with hand made and working on things that come loose, drop off, don't fit correctly, but ECU?? can't do a damn thing about that, hand made or not if the ECU is wrong, it's wrong and needs sorting quickly, mine was still not sorted for the year I owned it.
I don't want to compare a SLK with a Morgan, totally different cars, but for my purposes at the moment the SLK fits the job.
Cheers,
Ian

I get bored with cars after a while and start searching for something different. It's been the same with my Morgan history, had an excellent older 4/4 but started to get wandering eyes and bought my current 2008 Plus 4 which on the whole I love. But...am now probably in the market for something new or nearly new and have absolutely no confidence in getting rid of my excellent 2008 vintage for a new one with potentially many problems. I look at new ones and I see in some cases examples of a poorer finish than I have in/on mine, unacceptable blemishes or marks and if that's what you can see god knows what's going on underneath. A generalisation I know but to spend £45k plus and worry that it might not work is just not on...no new Morgan at that price with that reputation for me.

If you find a good one stick with it…….. probably true of wives as well…..!!!!!

I've just had the same dilemma, (not wives), new or used. I really couldn't spend
40 odd thousand, I just don't have confidence in the newer cars, rightly or wrongly.
Plus, I really don't feel a Morgan is worth that much money!!!!!!

I'd rather save £10k and get a very low mileage duratec +4. Which I have.
Only time will tell if it's good one…...

But if you feel like something different ( I typically take 7 years on cars or boats til that feeling arises)you wont really be achieving it by swapping an 08 trad for a 16 trad. After all the whole point about the trad is that it changes little from decade to decade.

Something different could be taking your existing car to a tuning shop for an extra 50 bhp, fitting a roll bar and doing some not too serious sprints or hill climbs? That might be a new skill to learn or you might be replying "been there done that".

Maybe an Aero. A second hand Aero wouldnt be a huge amount more than a new trad and its a totally different car. Or you could go really sporty and try something beginning L

I have been away for a while so I had other things on my mind rather than commenting on this thread.

I have owned my Plus 4 since 2012 and in that time I have clocked up over 55,000 km. The car has never let me down once. Sure I have had some little niggles but the only serious issue was the failure of the circuit board behind the dash. This mainly related to the ventilation fan and the air conditioner. The circuit board has now been bypassed and is not giving problems.

The car is surprisingly dry and the addition of a drain tube and a couple of bits of neoprene has resolved any problems with the ingress of water.

Suspension is now improved with the addition of Suplex components. Total cost about what a Rolex watch would cost, to put it in perspective.

I would like to see the factory make some improvements but I am enjoying my toy and customising it to my taste. It is exactly, well almost, what I wanted. A classic car with modern reliability.

Oh! And it generates more smiles than I would have believed possible, from children, adults, little old ladies, and of course from us.

Mark Evans at the factory assured me the ECU update would rectify ALL the problems I had been having for a year with the plus 4, he would not release the update until the factory had "tested" it and was happy it was OK, I was asked to keep it to myself until it was ready as he did not want all +4 owners contacting him for the upgrade.
I travelled 200 mile round trip for the upgrade only to find some things had been sorted, some had not.
The revs still hang, it revs to 2500 on cold start.
I took the car to have the emmissions checked as the exhaust was still sooty, the tester said it would easily pass the MOT emmissions, in fact it was running a bit too lean (this would account for the temperature rise at slow speeds, cooling fan coming on more than it used to).
I contacted Mark Evans again and was told there was another ECU update been looked at!
Who tested the ECU originally, who tested the ECU upgrade?
It was extremely difficult to get responses from the factory, customer service was nil, the factory don't keep dealers informed so asking the dealer didn't help.
I am quite happy with the hand built aspect of the car but come on, there are millions of cars using Fords engines that run perfectly, what is the problem????

£45000 on a car that does not run properly for a year, no customer service, I'd rather have the boring car and stress free motoring.

As for depreciation, the +4 lost £9000 in the year, if the SLK loses £9000 in the year then it will be worth £11000. Find me a 3 year old SLK 200 AMG for £11000.

I will be staying a member of the MSCC and watching all your posts on TM with interest.

One day when Morgan get their act together another +4 will probably be calling.

At the moment I'm getting smiles per mile where I was only getting stressed every time I went out.

Keep all the chat going on TM, I love it!!

Ian
