Green cars can be very unlucky! I Had a friend who who would not travell in a green car. as a non native speaker and grown up outside the Commonwealth I am irritated as the classic national colour would be racing green for UK. Any explanation for an alien? I might be wrong but I think I've heard a story that the superstition arose after two famous pre First World War racing crashes involving green cars The superstition then reached it's peak in the 20' and 30's and still existed in Nascar right up until a few years ago where no one raced in green livery I also remember reading a point about every main colour of racing teams was taken so when the British wanted a racing colour the only one available was green as everyone had avoided it Again I only remember someone telling me this a few years ago so might not be entirely right

It's just a daft superstition, nothing more.

IIRC BRG was selected because the early GB-hosted Gordon Bennett races were held in Ireland and green was chosen to honour Ireland

Didn't they want Red but it was taken by Italy? In the days of the Gordon Bennett Cup, Count Eliot Zborowski, father of inter-war racing legend Louis Zborowski, suggested that each national entrant be allotted a different colour. Every component of a car had to be produced in the competing country, as well as the driver being of that nationality. The races were hosted in the country of the previous year's winner. When Britain first competed in 1902, they had to choose a different colour from the national flag colours of red, white and blue, because those had already been taken for the 1900 race by America, Germany and France respectively. (Italy did not adopt its famous 'Racing Red' until a red Itala won the Peking to Paris race in 1907). When Selwyn Edge won the 1902 Gordon Bennett Cup race for England in his Napier it was decided that the 1903 race would be held in Ireland, at that time a part of the United Kingdom, as motor racing at the time was illegal in Great Britain. As a mark of respect for their Irish hosts[2] the English Napier cars were painted shamrock green.

just spent a very interesting half hour or so researching the superstitions regarding green cars and it appears its quite complex superstitions about wearing the colour green go way back to pagan times - something to do with woodland pagan belief and rituals apparently actors wearing the colour green in theaters over many years has been considered unlucky The only real connection to cars specifically which reinforced already held beliefs that wearing green was unlucky go back to america and 1911 where a green liveried race car plowed into a stand killing driver and spectators This seems to have grabbed attention and fueled the superstition so much that in American car racing and NASCAR in particular, green until recently was rarely seen on drivers and cars so I think green cars being seen as unlucky is just a continuation of long held superstitions and not specific to cars Although I still like my theory on the green cars not being seen against tree lined roads previously posted!!

I've only heard of this superstition as regards boats. Now, I'm not a superstitious person, but I'd be wary of a green boat. I mean to say, why push your luck ?

Thank you all for your explanations! (and sorry for causing another thread thrift)
My personal history does not confirm any green cars risks. My first car was a Spitfire in British racing green. My first German car was a green Golf. My second British car was a green Landrover. My first Morgan was a green M3W. None of my green cars was ever involved in an accident. Reliability was an issue with the Spitfire and the 3Wheele but that had nothing to do with the colours as far as I know.
