Hi, been away for a few days. just seen all the inputs. On the photo of the pump unit from DaveW you can clearly see the red clip on the sender head return line input. The "Supply" line has the same but its a white clip. The plastic hose clips are incredibly flimsy and appear to have a "few" O rings. As mine was only "partially out" we could see at least two- one of which had split. Also a piece of the red plastic fitting (like a bayonet leg) had also broken off. The AA man just eased it back into the unit receptacle and then Tie wrapped in to secure to the fuel unit header. As I said it didn't leak. That said this is a classic case of a "halfpenny of tar sinking the ship". or for "the want of a nail" etc etc.In terms of production costs I bet these clip would be circa 1p each and yet an expensive motor is rendered useless when it fails. Because of where its located the clip failure could only be fatigue caused by vibration. It appears they cannot be acquired as a separate part or fitted without some special tool. Thank god for "Williams" who are going to sort it when it goes in next month.
Just thought I would give an update on the connector problem. I found the issue was well covered as a problem on the Talk Ford forum (which I joined). Picture 1 (from the forum) shows the connectors and the key parts that failed on my car. After endless searches to find a source including emails to OEMs Lucas and Bosch (both unanswered), Ford dealer, scrap yards, Ebay etc I finally tracked down a breaker who had the connectors (see Picture 2. Now waiting for them to be delivered. The Ford Forum says that fitting without breaking is a challenge!!. I will keep you informed
Final update and tips. After trying to source the red clips at, Ford dealer, Bosch,Lucas(no reply from OEMs) , Northampton Autosports and Fuel Parts Ltd I drew a complete blank. The Ford dealer and the two spares providers all advised the clips could not be procured separately and the only way to get them was to buy a pump with clips fitted (£50 for 2nd hand pump up to £280 for a new one). The scrap dealers would not sell clips separately because if they sold clips they could not sell pumps without them! On ebay I found a guy trying to sell just the sender. After dialogue he sold me two cut off fuel pipes with clips and seals attached . (Photo in last post. So my choice was buy a new pump (if I wanted "new" clips) or fit the ones I got scrap for £6. I decided on the latter.
Removal and fitting. Ford apparently have a special tool but it can be done without. The sequence is imperative and cannot be varied . REMOVAL: Using paper clip wire I eased the three tabs (top and each side (there is not one on the bottom against sender) "OUT" for me this was counter intuitive. However by easing them outwards it allows you to pull out the pipe from the red clip connector lock (Arrowed in picture above). Then you push the same three tabs "IN" to release the red clip from the pump housing. Then you have to pull out the two O rings and spacer washer left in the housing.
Assembly: Put the Seals and spacer washer in to housing recess. (Ensure soaked in clean oil for later insertion of pipe, (sequence Brown seal first then washer then Yellow seal).
Insert red clip into housing with the flat on the outer circle at the bottom next to housing. The clip clicks into place. This also lightly compresses the seals just fitted. Lubricate pipe end and coax the pipe through the red clip and carefully through seals and washer. You the push the pipe hard into housing until it also clicks in the red clip. (no gap between clip face and pipe end face).
This final act locks the pipe into the red clip and the red clip into the housing. Job done.
All tested and all OK. The high pressure test on the fuel return line is when the engine is idling.
Anyway for the experienced Morganeers this is probably "old hat" for me its been a real pain in the a**e!. Hope it helps somebody?
Hi Guys Remember this saga with the fuel pump connector and the 1p plastic connector. Well, 11 months later, same connector has blown again- only partially this time! Fuel pouring out whilst driving. Spare wheel out, tank cover plate and spare wheel bracket out then managed to bodge a repair forcing fuel line end into pump and secure it with a tie wrap strap (Glad I watched the AA man's fix last time). Got home and now I have to start all over again with the second spare connector I got (from scrap yard) Still cannot source new ones, last time Morgan not interested. Any one have a clue as to what can be causing it? Any one had the same experience? Any one know where I can get new clips (see photo further up thread? Any suggestions appreciated.
