I'll give you one reason Peter. Roughly at the same time that pensions were switched over from equities to gilts, the courts took the view that in calculating the necessary funds to award to generate a future income for a claimant in serious cases, they would no longer use equity based products but would base on notionally less risky government loan stock. So instead of calculating based on the historic long term return of equities at 7% they based on gilts at 3%. Overnight the size of sums awarded doubled.

Now of course thanks to the B of E keeping government interest rates down, awards have had to go up further. The latest interest reduction will force awards up further still next year. Particularly since we now have both very low interest rates and rising inflation

Its exactly the same calculation that has doubled salary related pension deficits in the last year. Pension schemes need to have twice as much money in them because interest rates have halved and when the actuaries do the DCF calculations based on latest returns the necessary size of fund has shot up..

Compo in the millions, even more than that, isnt uncommon in severe cases. If you assume that the average net premium that the insurance company sees before its own costs is £500 then it takes something in the region of 20,000 policies to pay one major claim of £5 million. Then there are the costs of the insurance company and all the smaller claims to pay too.

This article is interesting. Lots of reasons, but nothing that properly explains WHY. Some excuses by the AA

1. Partly down to a tax hike imposed last year. The standard rate of Insurance Premium Tax – the tax paid each time an insurance policy is purchased in the UK – increased from 6% to 9.5% on 1 November 2015, as announced in the Summer Budget.

2. Michael Lloyd, director of AA Insurance, says personal injury claims – particularly those for whiplash – also continue to "haunt" the industry. It's estimated false and exaggerated claims add around £50 to the cost of every policy.

Research by AA Insurance last year suggested 11% of drivers thought it acceptable to make an insurance claim for an injury following a collision, even if none was suffered.

So, we are paying for greed, selfishness and incompetence.

As usual. hide surrender

The days of over inflated compensation awards for whiplash injuries are long gone, in my opinion. Our 70 year old housekeeper was hit head on by a car that cut across her turning right and wrote her immaculate Audi TT off and cause her quite severe whiplash injuries as a result. The other side admitted full liability but because her car was a 2004 and difficult to find a like for like replacement the £2,750 compensation she received for her significant trauma only want some way towards providing a replacement car.

Over two years since I was sideswiped by a 44 tonne artic that caused significant damage to my vehicle, since repaired and disposed of, had many months of distress and pain that greatly affected our business I am still waiting to be seen by the independent medical witness to produce the report that might be completed before the end of the year before we can even challenge the other side for liability. It's possible I will have another had to wait and at best my compensation may be about the same or if the dreaded knock knock appliance I might end up with enough after legal and medical costs to buy a sandwich. So the compensation levels are rally not there in our cases for the effect it has had on our lives.

Well, I have now committed to Insurance via Aviva 'Distinct'; £950 payable in 12 interest free instalments should you wish).

Apart from usual inclusions and enhanced financial legal and injury/health benefits there is in addition:

New for old replacement during first three years of initial registration. Agreed Value available thereafter.
Full RAC UK and European Breakdown Cover.
90 day European Cover per trip.
Alternative travel cover in the event of revocation of driving licence.
Personalised registration transfer fees.
Customer choice of repairer.
Enhanced Courtesy Car Benefits.
Even financial cover in the event of car-jacking and road rage!

Still insisting on Tracker though.....

All in all seems quite a reasonable deal....

Anyway, deal done as 'dealer' needed cover-note to get car registration papers submitted to DVLA...

Car due to roll off production line this week so hope to be behind the wheel very soon.....
