As I'm required to travel five up plus luggage on occcasions and do so "en-Golf" , a 911 isn't big enough for an only car. I know my limits, and that's why an A4 Avant is so tempting (but dull maybe). I'm a very creative packer of luggage by the way.

I ran a Saab 9-3 convertible for a couple of years. It was probably the fastest, most comfortable, most watertight, most spacious car with the easiest of convertible roofs that I've owned and now my kids have less big plastic toys and push-chairs to be carried everywhere one of them might get quite high on the list. Or (reminded by cerealsurfer's post below) maybe "upgraded" to a recent BMW 3-series convertible with the folding hard-top.
Another option would be a LR Discovery or Range Rover - I love the Defender I own at the moment but it's not best for long journeys with the family and doesn't give what you might call a 'spirited' performance. But the load-lugger ability is very welcome and the off-road ability provides fun in the right places and has been very welcome these past few weeks.
If I has no family to worry about then a sports-car - maybe a modern Morgan. From my MG days I know that I can adapt myself to live/travel within the constraints offered by the vehicle (creative packing again).
One of the deciding factors would always be whether the car would automatically make me a member of an exclusive club the way MGs, Land Rovers and Morgans do.
But I'm sorry - I can't make up my mind right now.

This has had me thinking for a while and it's come to the following...  The current - Alpina D3 Coupe. 214bhp and 332lb-ft torque 42mpg Pretty limited numbers, yet completely bulletproof... seats 4 with plenty of space, rear seats also split and the boot is huge. Servicing every 18k miles and they don't cost the earth... only expensive part seemingly tyres. Handles great and overall Great value!

I'm wondering,
if we did this tread in summer,
would anyone think of 4WD??????
I doubt it!!! Nope, one vehicle only 365 days a year would have to have a high driving position and comfort for me as well as 4WD. My choice therefore: Range Rover Sport (prefer the look and the drivability to the "full fat" version). TdV8 in this climate, Supercharged if fuel was a lot cheaper. Good news is if only allowed one car many many more people would have them rather than drug dealers and second rate footballers  Love the X6 but it only has 4 seats and less space. You Porsche guys either have no famies or friends or Porsche now supplies saws with the car to cut peoples legs off

I doubt it!!! Yes, but only because most of my near 35 years of motoring has been behind the wheel of something from the Land Rover stable... Summer or winter my original choice of 110 200 or 300 Tdi stands. Cheers,

The way things are going for us oldies, If we survive long enough, it may need to be something we can also live in, so it may need to be a boat.  (after we have been stripped bare by all & sundry financial and governmental who seem to be happily helping themselves to everything and anything, with little or no recourse it seems.) Does that sound like a moan, Simon? Couldn't agree more Frank! Well said!!

Reliant Scimitar GTE - great choice. A good friend had one for many years.

Not dissimilar to my Gilbern Invader Estate Graham, but wouldn't take five adults. I wouldn't rule one out though,especially with a V8 transplant.
But I'm still fancying a TVR. I need to itch that scratch, and probably keep the old Golf for cramming.
It's very confusing. I also like LandRovers (real ones).
Scratch that itch I meant..........
