Hannes, certainly the pic is photo shopped but you are right they don't cheat. Sadly, Heinz, it's quite likely that the photo isn't 'shopped. There's a curious subculture amongst owners of big diesel pickups in the US, who enjoy "rollin' coal" and will spend seemingly enormous amounts of money upgrading injectors, inlet & exhaust systems, and programmable ECUs so that they can turn it on and off on a whim. Wikipedia has a short explanation and a google search will turn up images and videos galore...

Doug, thanks for the link. TBH I'm personally not an overly green "planet saver" but this kind of pollution should be punished and the car has to be confiscated at least until it has been detuned back to normal.

That's poor. So if you were needing to sell your vehicle in the meantime where does that leave you? Just traded my scirocco in (for a merc) and was offered about £1k less than it was worth. But we all say that don't we?

The scam is also on the tax declaration power of the car in France and certainly in other countries. Who is responsible for paying the tax scam, the owner of the car or VAG?

In Germany the government first tried to let the consumers pay, but after a short time they realized that many people over here pay much more for engine oil and reject a good salad olive oil, which means that even the ordinary people are car infected. So I think VW has to pay the differences of tax.

Everyone now is out for blood, especially in the US which is a bit funny considering how few diesels are sold there. GM had a massive recall for their ignition key issue which killed people and they got a slap on the hand and a VERY minor fine. It should be noted that this was a well know issue for the better part of a decade!!!
That is par for the course whether they be fining european or japanese oil companies or banks or auto makers. Its easier to fine foreign companies than to collect the revenues by taxes, it has the advantage that it damages foreign competitors of american businesses, and foreign companies dont have senators in their pockets. Welcome to american justice. As for VW in the EU I dont see how they can be pursued for NOx cheating when NOx isnt tested here. And as for the silly C)2 numbers that all car makers give, they have no alternative since they arent allowed to quote any other number but the one from the mandated EU test. Does anyone believe the fuel consumption numbers we are given?

I'm sure I will get blasted for this.
I proudly work for VW Germany which as you know has many great brands under their belt. They also employ 100's of 1000's of people spread across the world who work hard at what they do. To hear that the crooks at VW or those cheats used in a gernalised way is getting tiresome and a bit uncalled for as it was a small select group who were behind this.
Have a good read on the topic and it appears almost all diesels do not meet the emission standards. I am not apologizing the program cheat topic but this was all done by a small handful of people compared to the massive amount of works who didn't have any part of it.

Bringing it closer to home, Bentley located in Crewe has a few 1000 employees which are very much removed and isolated. If every class action was paid out to the sums that were in the US I could only imagine that whole town and factory could be in trouble.
VW is working hard and harder than I've ever seen to resolve this issue to satisfy the governing bodies and those affected. It's also my understanding that any tax implications are also being looked at.
Sinking a company as large as VW would have such a wide reaching negative impact on more parts of the economy greater than one could imagine.
I can't imagine for a moment that the average person truly believes they will reach the fuel economy and emissions stated on the window sticker. Ask anyone what their car should be getting and most wouldn't have a clue.
Yes, it was a chest and yes it's ugly but look past the gernal numbers published and compare what is truly coming out of the pipes vs what was advertised and the actual delta isn't what it's made out to be and furthermore not far off what everyone else is pumping out.
Rant over 😐
Cannot pass this one by. You are trying to justify illegal and immoral actions on the basis of "it would be bad for lots of good guys"? But SORRY the techs have screwed up the value of hundreds of 1000's of cars. There can be NO EXCUSE for this. Go hide under a rock!

Perry, I understand your point of view and also I am aware that it would have tragic consequences if such a huge company like VW could be bankrupted. Regarding your example with GM, when I recall it in the right way they had to pay a fine not less than 3.5 Billion (in German Milliarden, 1000 times a Million) USD which is not pocket money.
But here in Germany what only a few can accept is that an a....le like Martin Winterkorn who was obviously aware about the whole fraud (if you believe in the latest news) was admittedly fired, ok, but afterwards the decision was to get him another 17 Million Euro paid.

Im completely with you Perry Nothing illegal nor immoral just very clever, VW's only mistake is being German and European selling into the US, the most litigious, pernicious and greedy capitalist system built on car manufacture and the love of burning oil Now, where did i put my new book ' How to Win Friends and Influence People ' ?
