Fair points made. I guess the real reason i was hacked off is that the issue has affected the value of the car. Even though VW have said they will correct the tech side it will IMHO never reinstate the value. If the problem gets fixed why would the value be affected?

Perry I have to apologize telling wrong numbers about the GM fine. Hannes, of course I'm sitting also in a glasshouse and shouldn't throw with stones. I also have another manifold etc. on my 4/4. My point is that VW claimed, even in US TV ads, to offer the cleanest Diesel the world can buy. If they had kept their feet on the ground regarding such claims, VW probably would not be in such a catastrophic situation. All manufacturers have to struggle with emission limits to meet but VW claimed to be "better than others". And this is a behave where at least the US reacts very sensitive if it is untrue.

Perry I support your view. You don't sue the receptionist if you lawyer looses a court case. There are some broad points that VW and most other car makers need to address re "optimisation" against the well documented tests performed. They do need to make reparations but not in the stupid manner that it seems to be occurring with government fines above compensation to owners. Will people in the US now buy GM or will they buy Hyundai instead. They do need to make it up for the breach but perhaps in a more positive than putative manner.
The groups cars have been common in our extended family for years. My recent purchase was an Audi. Petrol. It did not put me off. The Morgan's do have a higher emissions than the other cars on the fleet so I have no moral high ground.
Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.

I'm a little bit surprised that someone driving a +8 gets over sensitive on emissions of orher cars.
We enjoy useless sports cars, burn petrol for the pure fun of driving and point our finger at modern cars because of pollutions? My 4/4 hardly meets any modern standards as I got an updated ECU, alternative exhaust system and an open air filter. My 2 ton Audi runs better fuel economy than my light 4/4. I wonder how much more petrol is burned to move a +8 By the way: my M3W with the "great" S&S engine from the US is most likely even worse on emissions/horsepower than your +8. At least it burns more petrol per mile than any of my other cars.
The issue with this VW problem is one of deceit and falsification. Yes, I drive a Plus8 and am aware of the emissions compared to smaller, newer engines. I pay a price for the enjoyment in extra fuel costs/tax, VED, etc.. This is a personal choice. My comments about VW are based on the deceit/false claims aspects. How many people are truly eco conscious to the full extent? Not many. Most will agree with the concepts and make some changes. However, cost saving is the more prevalent reason. High mileage driving? Buy a diesel to cut fuel costs, enough to save money even with tax loading, car value etc. I did this for purely personal economic reasons and reverted when things changed. Go electric? Not cost effective for me. I would guess that most people with a fun/hobby/lifestyle car like a Morgan make similar decisions. Which model depends on their personal tastes and circumstances. What should happen to VW? Corporate liability up to a sensible level. Individuals responsible for the policy/deceit....further action, possibly criminal. Both depending on legal factors.

If it comes to advertising faulty facts: Our beloved sports car manifacturer may be in deep troubles now. Just read the leaflets and compare with reality. My M3W experience could pay a years business for a clever advocate.😈
Nevertheless I'm a happy customer and let them off the hook

I look on this differently - The rule was that engines must meet certain tests in very controlled test conditions. Most manufacturers spent millions getting their engines to meet the standards ONLY at the test conditions - outside these conditions they produce "wads" higher levels of pollutants. VAG merely did the same thing by a software patch.
Most of the protestations are what I term"holier than thou" as the other manufacturers produce just as much pollutants in real world conditions. What REALLY needs to be done is to have tests that are a reflection of the real world. Then, and only then, can proper comparisons be made.
Rant over!!!!!

I agree re having real world tests. If they can be configured to do so without having a test mode override then that would be good. What VW did was have a test situation identified which then would kick in a special engine management condition to run. If the relevant US test specifications are not saying that this is not allowed then technically VW are in the clear maybe not morally but that would be another discussion. Cars with multiple modes ..... must they pass in each mode? To me the crux is the legality of the test mode software within the spec for the test parameters as laid down. I am interested to see the final result. The lawyers will be interesting to watch! I also wonder how European emissions will be dealt with. It is probable that NOx will come on board, and a move to real life test conditions. I bet the political lobbyists are frantically pushing their cases.

Still waiting for the fix, but sold the car and moved on (a little out of pocket IMO)
