On a more serious note, I doubt if the current head restraints would actually restrain and prevent whiplash. By the time the head had moved back to contact it, the damage would have been done.

Has anyone fitted a roll bar to a Roadster circa 2010? The car I am buying does not have a tonneau. My last car was fitted with a Safety Devices bar with tonneau and head r's pockets.

By the time the head had moved back to contact it, the damage would have been done. That might be true of a lot of cars. I presume there will be some legislation regarding their positioning? What about integral racing seats?

Interesting to see that on all the many Hillclimb and Sprint events I have visited this year competitors now have a Hans Device fitted to their helmets.
In essence this helps prevent the first stage of Whiplash - that is the head moving forwards into the chest area.
So does this mean that this first head "movement" in a crash causes the damage/whip effect - I think so.
BTW the Hans Device does not seem to apply to Classic Classes.

Its main raison d'etre Neil is to prevent stretching of the neck in the event of a rapid deceleration. The skull is quite a heavy object. Sufficient stretch can damage the spinal cord. In a heavy frontal impact it could have the same effect as the drop from a gallows.

Head restraints prevent whiplash damage from being hit from behind, the HANS device sounds like it is for front end impacts.
Most recommendations I've seen say three inches or less from the back of your head to the head restraint. You should also set the height so the point of contact is level with the top of you ears or higher.
