I have a 2 yr old Audi A6 Estate.... When I was a child I had a mouse that had more character.
Most exciting thing about it is that it's in the naughty class for bad emissions. Fuel consumption is rubbish I based the purchase on a Ford Mondeo we had as pool car which averaged 56 mpg - I thought a new Audi would bet that - well you know what "thought" thought, it does about 43mpg on average - not impressed and am easily pleased as a Land Rover / Morgan owner.

Isn't that the same for many new cars -fantastic for getting you where you want to go in effortless cosseted comfort but dull

Yes! Exactly for this reason I will sell our 2010 Eclass T model soon and I keep our beloved 220CE coupe from 1992 as we don't need the space any longer. Most modern cars are superboring.

Earlier this week I had a BMW 320i Touring for 24 hours as a rental. It is unremittingly bland and served only to confirm my decision to get rid of my own similar car 18 months ago.

At the moment there isn't a new car that is affordable to me and that I'd want to buy.

+1 I am so bored with new cars that most of the time I haven't got a clue what they are. One of our cars is an 04 diesel Freelander with 156k on it and it's a bit like a tractor but so versatile and still got loads of character to drive. Fortunately I no longer rack up the distances I used to so it would be different if I did, I'm sure.

I will have to get a new car some time in the next 12 months. I really don't want another car as we could get by with the Morgan and one other car but really wanted a car she could think of as all hers. The problem is that she wanted the Polo, not a bad car but too small for 3 or 4 people with luggage so the Alfa Crosswagon will have to be replaced by something with a similar carrying capacity. I rather fancy the mid sized BMWs but I am also thinking seriously of the Maserati Ghibli. In both cases I would probably look for a low mileage dealer demo of company car. I will probably go to Geneva again next year and make a decision there.

Boring cars are great for long distance driving and commuting. No need to exaggerate but simply getting the job done.
For fun driving they sell sports cars and fun cars.

I can't help wondering if some of you chaps don't need to pop down to specsavers to get them to check your glasses for rose tintedness.

To my mind everyday modern cars are so much better than their predecessors in all respects. Faster, safer, more economical, more reliable, more comfortable.

I do get that compared to the experience of driving a sports car as visceral as a Morgan, all everyday cars seem very dreary, but if you chaps had never bought such a car, would you be looking at modern daily drivers with such disdain ?

I guess older cars were more interesting in a Confucian sort of way (as in "may you live in interesting times). But I won't be swapping my car for any of those that my Dad owned when I was a kid any time soon.....
