Sorry boys, even the creative 'man maths' won't cut it on this one.

£6000 with 40% tax relief so £10k plus modest growth over five or more years, say £12 to £14k+)yes I know the markets rise/fall scenario)

Having said that Morgan + Porsche ownership made no sense at the the time, and no regrets there.

Daft as a Ken fishy me!

Since 5 years I wear an Explorer 1, that one with the then new 39mm case. It's my first (and only) Rolex. You could say, a beginners model, but I think it is an all time classic. I liked the 36mm Explorer 1 a lot for many years before, but it is not suited to my wrist. All the older Rolex models of 36mm diameter look stupid on my wrist. And not only a few of the newer bigger Rolex models are too blinky in my view.

Before that purchase I've collected some 5 or so watches during the last 25 years. All this different models I like a lot, also a non automatic Speedmaster is among them. What I can say is that the wear comfort of this comparably light and balanced Explorer is so good that I don't tend to wear one of the other watches any more. The wear comfort of a Rolex I think is the best, a not to underestimate point.

Actually I have realised that buying a decent watch is a good investment, and you don't have to spend loads to do it. I paid £1000 for my Tag Heuer Carrera 11 years ago, and they are now apparently worth around £1200!

Not mine, though, it's acquired a fair bit of patina in my ownership smile

Visited a friend in Yorkshire last week who is now 92. He has a good selection of watches. Whilst there we were told about his latest bargain. He had bought a new leather strap on Ebay for his Rolex and paid £2.47 including shipping etc. I hope the bargain strap is secure and that his watch stays on his wrist.

swmbo and I had a quiet chuckle. The man always did have an eye for a bargain.

Can you swing an early retirement / redundancy deal that works for you?

Redundancy followed by self-employment/contracting. Best thing I ever did

I'd have to do it Tim's way Paul.
That was the plan last year. For reasons I'm not prepared to air (for the moment) I took on other projects and remained - we needed some financial stability for a while longer...
