Britain certainly shafted Australia/New Zealand when we joined up. I remember the arguments, especially about NZ lamb imports.

I'm not convinced that social media impacted on Brexit. The young demographic who voted remain are the social media addicts. The grey leave vote? How many even know what social media is?

The elections in France could be a game changer.

The big problem is the rise of right-wing, nationalist, popularist parties. People think that things will change for the better but fail to see that these people are in it for their own benefit, not for the benefit of the people.

We have just seen Salvini, the head of the Italian popularist party, exulting the Trump win and saying "The Donald Trump victory is a blow to globalisation and it is the victory of the people, of courage, pride, labour and security issues, in spite of the bankers, speculators, singers, journalists and pollsters. The people defeated the powers 3 to 0".

That would make you think he was a communist but he is at the opposite extreme: right-wing, nationalist, anti-immigration, etc.

Unfortunately the people's fears are not totally unfounded and it is certainly the fault of the politicians and powerful financial interests that we are worse off than we were 30 years ago. The flood of migrants is not helping the situation either. Various interests are making money out of the migrant situation, care, housing, etc. More money is being spent on each individual migrant than some citizens are getting in pensions or unemployment support. The people who have been in power, financial and political, have been far too greedy. The trouble is that the rise of the popularists is not actually going to help this situation.

We have seen a parallel situation to what is happening in the USA with Burlusconi: A popular right wing leader (though not an extreme nationalist) who is a tax avoider, womaniser, arrogant, and self interested. Under his rule many laws were made or changed that benefited him and his friends. Were the ordinary people who voted for him better off? No, not at all.

Now is the time for Europe to pull together. Faced with an isolationist USA which fears the strength of a united Europe we need each other more than ever. The EU and its member states need to do everything to encourage investment, reduce taxes, increase spending and thereby increase employment to improve the lot of ordinary people. The policy of increasing taxes reduces spending, investment and employment.

Change is overdue but we must change together, not separately. Individually we become easy fodder for the major powers.

Many, many opinions which I find very interesting. If nothing else, it shows that TMer's are a well educated bunch.
I am not a political animal so I don't have a feel for either Clinton or Trump but can a billionaire be a complete pillock? He must know something about wealth generation.
Peter, yes, we should work very hard to generate trade links with the Commonwealth especially whilst Her Majesty is still the head and such a believer.
As for France, I can't see them leaving the EU after all, every chap with 2 chickens and a goat is a farmer and therefore can claim benefits.
IMHO I think if anyone would leave it would be Holland which is a small, hardworking country just like the UK.
Finally, although I voted to stay in the EU, now we have the decision lets just get on with it as soon as possible and prove that we can become Great Britain again but just on trade not world domination. uk

Having to sell the Morgan to hedge the damage done to my retirement fund is a real possibility now. Never underestimate the stupidity of the American public.

At least we have presidential bunga bunga parties catered by white house chef Guy Fieri to look forward to.
