I thought the ads section was there to give one a chance to brew another cuppa??
I keep misreading the title of this thread too, which isn't helping...

I repeat: they are wasting our money! The price of goods and services is inflated to cover the high, and constant, advertising in all forms of media.

At least TM is an advertising free zone thumbs

Both brothers and ALDI founders died recently, in between a couple of years. Up to that time one of the Aldi core messages was learned by everyone - and ever in an "unspoken" way:
"We, Aldi, don't spend money on advertising, making this way our offers cheaper to afford". Aldi only had one single communication tool, a cheap and unsexy flyer called "Aldi informiert". The funny thing is, this flyer had a cult status and it "had" to look cheap and functional...this way it was the proof that Aldi does not spend cash on adverts.

Now they start TV adverts, also in print magazines and newspapers. People are really confused about it.

On the other hand almost every other company cannot live without spending some money on adverts and it will not make the jobs of their employees safer to avoid it. Which is the right balance of investments, which is a really good selling campaign resp. the best positioning of a brand, thats the question.

I think a lot of advertising does not work but at the end of the day it is we, the consumer, that pay the mark up to cover this "oh so necessary" advertising, and the over inflated salary of the marketing manager that approved it, and the advertising manager that dreamed it up.

Companies feel that they must compete with advertising campaigns to get the business and any rubish is ok if it gets people talking about them.

The result folks is: tv pays millions for the right to broadcast football matches and a few footballers and their agents become very rich, some company executives get rich by paying all this and others get rich by reducing costs (reducing workers), moving production offshore, etc., deals are given to big stores that force small shops out of businesses. Consumers then can't find the cash to pay for "must have" products and borrow to buy them.

Gradually the whole economy spirals down, many people start having trouble putting food on the table, and we arrive at the point where any little hiccup sends us into depression.

Welcome to the world of;higher prices, closing factories, unemployment, debt, and depression (and here I am talking about people, not the economy).

Most of us on here are moderately, if not very, well off but the world is changing and it would not take much to tip the balance.

Sorry to be so pessimistic. I'll get off the soap box now soapbox

Peter , you are very accurate in your analysis , the whole thing is crazy !

Used to be a retailer in Western Australia that started as a salvage Company ( it has since closed its doors) whose advertising campaign was purely " we aren't fancy but we're cheap". It was a sort of fore runner to the $2 shops and Red Dot. The surname of the Italian owner was Salviadore, this got changed to Luigi Savadamoney for advertising.

I just don't understand it, what message are they trying to put across and what is the product.
I don't care if a load of blokes want to act out some kind of fantasy, it doesn't affect me but, and lets now be completely honest with ourselves, would this post be the same if it was a load of lovely girls just like Jays section?
I for one don't think so!!

I don't remember, if an add ever made me buy something directly, but I do remember how the style or wording of an add have kept me from buying a product.
Look at the actual Mercedes Benz advertising in Germany: their header says
"Das Beste, oder nichts." (The best, or nothing at all)
To me, that's just plain arrogance with which I do not want to be associated.
