Advertising works on on all of us. Even those who claim it doesn't. Read Cialdini.

I think a lot of advertising does not work but at the end of the day it is we, the consumer, that pay the mark up to cover this "oh so necessary" advertising, and the over inflated salary of the marketing manager that approved it, and the advertising manager that dreamed it up.

Companies feel that they must compete with advertising campaigns to get the business and any rubish is ok if it gets people talking about them.

The result folks is: tv pays millions for the right to broadcast football matches and a few footballers and their agents become very rich, some company executives get rich by paying all this and others get rich by reducing costs (reducing workers), moving production offshore, etc., deals are given to big stores that force small shops out of businesses. Consumers then can't find the cash to pay for "must have" products and borrow to buy them.

Gradually the whole economy spirals down, many people start having trouble putting food on the table, and we arrive at the point where any little hiccup sends us into depression.

Welcome to the world of;higher prices, closing factories, unemployment, debt, and depression (and here I am talking about people, not the economy).

Most of us on here are moderately, if not very, well off but the world is changing and it would not take much to tip the balance.

Sorry to be so pessimistic. I'll get off the soap box now soapbox

At least the ad has achieved that here is talk about it. If it sells more (or any) products is another question. But some strategies are long term planned and this ad might be a kind of awareness triggering "opener" of whatever style before a more serious postioning of the brand (which could already be in the drawer) will take over concerning their kind of communication.

I think it is, as has been said, toe curlingly painful. I just don't see how it will sell anything.

The Company behind it is, like all comparison websites, on a hiding to nothing. They have an business model that has no long term future, I feel. Increasingly with hotel bookings I find that if I use a comparison site and then contact my preferred hotel directly I get a lower price. So the comparison web site doesn't get paid.

Peter you could be right but I guess they get payed because the hotel is listetd there anyway regardless if you boolk directly. Of course in the case of direct booking they do not participate and have no profit on the single case.

We all like to think that we're far too clever to be influenced by advertising but it does work on our subconscious.
Advertising is so important now that it's become a competition for the big supermarkets to have the best Christmas ad, often a two minute "story". So much so that this year I saw internet previews of them and "news" (?) articles!
So often I see an ad and think "what the hell did that have to do with (insert the product or service they're supposedly promoting)? I do think that some of the agencies try to be too "clever" by far.
We tend to record most tv now so that we can fast forward through the ads so they're wasting there time and money with us.
