Never use a road atlas - havent got one. If interesting roads are required I plot a route on the PC and then squirt it down to a Garmin sat nav.

Rest of the time I use Here on the phone - its free. Or my sense of direction which is surprisingly effective. Well it surprises me anyway when I get where I intended

Actually, finding a good Atlas that suits your eyes and needs it not that easy and I always find it is the outdated tatty atlas that I have just been forced to retire that was the best. Sounds like you've found that the Phillips one suits you now though, I shall have a look at them next time I am in town.

Driving solo I find that a SatNav is useful, though I would always recommend one that you can plot a route on the computer and download the detail to the device. I do this with my handheld Garmin device, the screen isn't great to be honest but the system does allow me to choose my route and download it (and has UK OS Mapping for walking/cycling etc). I have used it all over Europe on pre-determined routes, with an atlas as a back up and planning aid.

What I never do is set the destination in the SatNav and let it take me by whatever route it selects, a recipe for disaster IMHE.

What a disaster that can be!

A couple of weeks a go we were in Devon - driving from Plymouth to Ashburton - dead easy.

Or so you would think!

We had to get across Plymouth and so used the TomTom - we ended up in the middle of nowhere down a white - with traffic coming the other way ( clearly also guided by TT!!)

What makes me chuckle is people who buy a new one every year must be the new A1 from Wales to Cornwall .
Dad had an Atlas a Standard Atlas ( caravette ) 1 litre he got me to paint the lower sills all the way round inc the back and front thats where I got the bug from to tinker . I have a photo of dad sitting in front of it on a deck chair in his leopard skin swimming trunks . He did not care a stuff what others thought. The thing was for ever konking out but dad had no interest in mechanics at all, his 3 wheeler in the late 40s and early 50s did the same and put him off cars for life , claimed he could change its clutch while asleep. On top of Sutton Bank the Atlas ran out of water in the rad . Dads army days idea was to pee in the rad ( the engine between the front seats ) dad, me, Brother he even picked the Staffy up but no look the mind boggles leg up dog use the tail as a pump handle and squirt in there , good boy . When he looked at mam her stern look said it all he knew his place like all husbands . The bloody thing stank like hell but got us to a farm house for water .

For those with a real interest in maps , there was an offer in a newspaper a few weeks ago . If you sent in your post code along with a cheque . They would send out a copy ( coloured) of your area 10 1/2 x 16 1891 OS MAP. It arrived y/day unable to put it down its so interesting . Because we life in an old house ( solid walls ) on digging through the deeds there is a small map in black and White of the area with a pathway into a wood over the road. Think I will get that map framed and pop it on the wall already got some Victorian post cards I got of Granddad in a frame.

Toilet stops get marked in ours. Usually by who will always follow the route on a map even if we have set the sat-nav in advance to take us by a specific route (agreed by both of us). Do you think she has trust issues?

Start with an atlas for route planning then transfer to the satnav. Just recently I've got the OS Map app which is excellent for planning when used in conjunction with the atlas and satnav.
