I do not believe that the reseller pays that price for the first year either !

Nearly all instances of these warranties proves fruitless, they rarely cover what you would like and even moreso on specialist cars which they would try to wriggle out of.

Best put it in the piggy bank! smile

When i brought my 911, the dealer provided a warrenty underwritten by themselves on the basis that they were 99% sure i wouldn't need to use it. If i had had to use it then the work would have been completed at their premises or my local porsche dealer. Whichever was best for me.

I've had numerous warranties on past cars - the two times I needed to make a claim, and had upgraded warranties on place, both the dealer & the warranty company ducked out of any responsibility.

- a pulley on a Renault V6 failed, causing the engine's timing belt to snap.
- gearbox oil should've been changed as part of the import process; it wasn't, and the gearbox failed

So I don't bother with warranties now!

It wouldn't apply in your case Amrum, but the best value warranty I've had is the one negotiated during purchase.
I've agreed with the selling dealer that I'll take the car to an independent specialist - and I tell them which one - and agree that the selling dealer will fix any new faults found, at their own expense.
I then pay the specialist for an hour or two's labour, to inspect the car.

That's how I got Meridien Maserati to do £4-£5k's worth of work on a £12k car :-)

When I purchased the Series 2 it came with an aftermarket warranty. It was not from a Morgan dealer and his own words were "for what its worth". He was open about the challenges of claiming and said if I needed to make a claim he would help guide me on the correct

Six months later at the end of summer the air/con gasps a death (pump) and surprise surprise they take one word out of a sentence and tell me down the phone that that absolves them of any payment.

I am waiting for someone to use the sale of goods act on this situation.

Has anyone actually had an aftermarket warranty that paid out for anything??

I did have a full Warranty on a used Golf GTi.

After a few months the Cruise Control became intermittent.

"Ah Sir - you are not covered for intermittent faults and if we work on your car you will be charged".

Cost me £375 to fix swear

Read the small print is my advice!!

I have a warranty on my Landrover freelander with AutoTrust, last year the aircon developed a leak and this year the starter motor failed, on both occasions the warranty paid out immediately paying in full for genuine parts and labour costs of £70 per hour, so i cant fault them and i have easily recouped what i pay each year.

Good Luck

If it doesn't cover mechanical failures what the hell does it cover? Everything else, body condition, paint, etc is stuff that you would look at closely before buying and would be unlikely to give rise to a warranty claim.

Sounds as though this is something right on the edge of fraud.

We give you a years warranty but in the small print exclude everything that you are likely to want to make a claim for!

Isn't there a warranty that dealers must give on second hand vehicles in the UK?

In Italy even second hand vehicles have a minimum warranty of 2 years but as this is often too much for the dealers it can be reduced to 1 year by an accord with the purchaser. This is normally in all contracts for all second hand vehicles. In effect if you don't agree they won't sell you the car.

This warranty covers all expenses that are not consistent with the normal use and maintenance of the car. Wear and tear is not covered so you would not get a new clutch on a car that has 50K for example. However if the oil pump failed and the engine was destroyed, or the gearbox failed, you would probably be covered.

I was told that the idea is that if

you could not have predicted it
you had no warning - it just broke
it was not predicted at a last service or anything other MOT type check
there were no noises
you stopped as soon as possible.

Then they would begin to consider it. This was their first get out process.

Not unreasonable. The issue is when they ask questions and you saying anything at all. They are more than a little practiced from my experience.
