Welcome from sunny Scotland. I don't know very much technical detail regarding your project but I will say this, that all on here who have replied know what they are talking about. Good luck!

I have owned two moss box morgans +8 +4. you soon adapt to the slower gear change. Dont spoil a rare car. Just my opinion.

I have a +8 with a T-5 transmission. I have adapted the T-5 to a 3.5 engine and recently changed to a 3.9. I also live in the U.S. and have access to D&D Fabrications who engineered this for Me. Mr. Eale in the UK would probably be a better choice for You. D&D supplied the bellhousing, internal clutch slave, and a GM Clutch as well as the T-5 transmission.

I agree with the others. You are ruining a good setup. The Moss Box has its limitations, but is IMO a delightful transmission. Some say You need a 5th gear. Well I rarely use the 5th gear on My T-5. I use 4th as I like the power. On long trips I will use 5th on what You call the "Motorway". But I avoid the Motorway's when I drive My Morgans.

If You must have a 5 spd than a R380 is the way to go for ease of converting. In anyevent You will have to cut and reinforce your chassis to accommodate the bell housing. As was pointed out You will have to remove the clutch mechanism and use a hydraulic setup. Nothing is particularly hard to do, but there is quite a lot involved. On My 3.9 I was required to cut the back of the crank shaft 1/2". Did it with a Makita Angle Grinder (cut off). I am an accountant. I did it OK, BUT! looks like Hell. How did I know to cut it off 1/2"? Mark at D&D instructed Me and sent a drawing. I was lucky that I did not ruin the engine.

Contact Me off line if You want more details. But My advice is don't do it. Also don't go to a 4.6. If You have not driven a +8 much, I am quite sure You can scare the P-- out of yourself with a 3.5, If Not a little modification will give You sufficient power to do so.

BTW: I have a spare Morgan/Rover R380. However: I live in Seattle. But then Ships go by My house going to Europe. Maybe You have the connections to make this happen.

My old +4 (1963) and the Morgan I take long trips with (LeMans in 2012) has a Moss Box. I also installed a Laycock OD. I rarely use the OD. Only on Motorways. But I love the Moss Transmission. 3rd gear is 1.20 ratio. As My hearing is bad I often forget to shift out of 3rd. It is great for passing or when I need a bit more power. Now we are talking about 100 HP not 200+ from a +8. I don't need Synchromesh in 1st gear. Maybe a racer does I don't know. A +8 has so much torque in 4th gear that 3rd may become unnecessary. But for accelerating out of curves I bet I could put it to good use in My +8.

I love my Moss box +8 Serial R7228.If you want more power why not go whole hog and put in an LS1 corvette conversion.

I drove a +8+ for 4 days in Northern California. A friend lent it to Me for "Flog Mog". 5 MPH or 125 MPH. All very easy. I had problems with the Getrag 6 spd. No matter, it did not make much difference. My view was I did not need this power. It was useless to Me and at My age and driving ability maybe a bit dangerous. However as Rover engines wear out and reliable parts get harder to get the Corvette engine has been a good reliable option. I would not "Thumb My Nose" or even "Hold My Nose" but not My "Cup Of Tea"

THANKS again for all your kind reactions.
In the meantime I have now had the Original engine overhauled and mildly tuned. I did swap for a T5 and managed to do so without modifying the Original 1970 chassis smile .

Took the car for summer vacation and drove 3000km in 2 week a sheer pleasure.

If someone can explain how to upload pictures.........

Great stuff Arjen and glad you are enjoying the car.

Did You keep the old bellhousing? If so, how did You do it?
