M3W bevel box

Here are some images I took after warming it up prior to changing the oil.

Good clear thermo pics but think it will take a bit of cunning and effort to find out what is going on in the bevel box. Maybe setting it up on video or time lapse with the boot closed and taking it for a high speed run from near cold till it starts to howl would give an indication of whether the howl is directly related to temperature. Either that or just buy ear plugs in bulk! laugh

It would be nice if MMC would get going on this issue.

I had an amusing exchange of e-mails on this subject with Quaife Engineering, while writing my book. Well, I was amused though the other party became slightly huffy. Then I sent a photo of a long skid mark and the tone changed...

With thermocouples attached so I can see the temp real time while driving , I have seen it go over 110C , worryingly near the limit of many oils.

I find this a bit mystifying, to be honest. 100C is clearly far too high for a running temperature, indeed I find 40C a bit concerning, there's no way a bevel drive should run so hot, is there? I can't see why they would run any hotter than a differential.

And yet Quaife are an extremely reputable engineering company with years and years of expertise in designing, developing, & producing gear systems, and bevel final drives have been around for donkey's years on motorcycles, so it's not like the concept hasn't been thoroughly worked out.

One can't help wondering if MMC wouldn't or couldn't afford to spend sufficient money to get a properly-developed design?

I received a reply only after I sent an e-mail containing a proposed paragraph. The chap replied "...I would strongly urge you to check your findings with Morgan for factual accuracy before publishing content that could later be damaging to your reputation."

My response to this, with skid mark photo attached, was: "To paraphrase Philip Marlowe, I’m not worried about my reputation; I’m not trying to sell it. Maybe you should be more concerned about maintaining your company’s good reputation, however."
