If you apply self adhesive felt to both contact surfaces no damage can occur. If you need to remove the felt from the paintwork for any reason soak in white spirit. Or felt on the belt and paint protection film on the paint. It seems logical to me that direct contact with the paint with any material will mark especially if it picks up grit.
