tunable exhaust

Re the topic on too much / too little noise
Made this to get "noise on demand" The valve to the side pipe is controlled by a lever on the tunnel

It cannot be...our new AMG C63 has exactly this on the rear silencers when Sport + engine mode is selected, or a button on the dash is pressed.

The control is electronic, the effect is VERY noisy as the engine management computer adds revs and fuel to make the effect even more pronounced, up-change, down-change and overrun.....all result in a level of sound that is clearly audible from half a mile away....

The noise is compelling, addictive and enjoyable... It is, almost, embarrassing (but not quite) and I honestly feel that it should be impossible to select when in a 30mph limit....out of respect for others.

(I wish The Plus 8 did this!)

I find myself dreaming on this description alone..

love

This LINK gives a good idea of the sound.
And how it goes when driven round the "Green Hell" my a Mercedes Test Driver.

Just awesome. If the future for supercars (whatever that means when hatchbacks can now outsprint exotica) is V6 rather than V8, V10, V12 then I shan't mind if they all sound like this.

On a related note, the switchable exhaust valve on the new MINI JCW Challenge is activated via Bluetooth from a keyring fob (which says 'not for road use'). I wonder if this is to thwart legislators in case they get tougher on noise limits if the switchable device is physically part of the vehicle controls.

AMG has no such reservations.

Not under current legislation. My AMG45 has a switchable 'Group B Rally Car Sound Effects' button. I was really getting at MINI maybe having a more future-proof solution if things should change for future production

Hey what's this Collin, are you suggesting this is not real? What makes you think that? If I have any skills its certainly not with photo software. smile
Cheers J

I think the position of the front weld gave it away ;-)

I love your pipes....;-)

Ah, the front weld no notice is actually the spring that pulls the valve closed.

Or I am not a Morgan enthusiast tinkering in the shed but a foreign hacker trying to corrupt this forum with subversive and illegal Idea's.

Few more picture on the set up will follow (when I am done with fotoshopping innocent
Initially I used a shorter main-silencer to create space for the y-piece. This made the closed-valve noise too high. Now working on combing the Y-piece with the (modded) original silencer.

Stuart,

the C43 has no such warning or restriction, not in the "handbook" nor on the display when the car is put into Sport or Sport + modes. So perhaps it isn't as loud as the A45?

I will have a chat with the dealer when I go in again, I'd like to know for sure as one day I'll make a lot of noise in front of a Police car...!!
