Hello

Does anyone know whether Morgan when building 4/4s in the 1970s used the Ford engine number or did they stamp a separate "Morgan" number over the Ford engine number?

Cheers

They have used the Ford engine number.

However, my 1972 4/4 doesn't have an engine number stamped on the block where Ford usually stamp them. The history of the car is known from new so its not had a replacement motor

I've several spare 711M blocks which are stamped with an engine number!

So there you have it: they either do or they don't.

The last 3 (or 4) digits of the engine number are usually stamped on the flange of the bonnet hinge on the nearside towards the front. The Ford engine number is stamped on a horizontal flange on the top of the block below #1 plug.

Hello

Thanks for the replies.

I have no engine number stamped of flange at top of bonnet, nor on flange of bonnet hinge. Sure I found some time ago part of the engine number stamped somewhere on the block but can't find it now!

Will investigate further when I do some serious cleaning.

Cheers

Philip

Just been back through my file for the 4/4. I have the brown luggage tag despatch label for the 4/4 with an engine number on it, the bonnet halves with an engine number on them and a v5 with the engine number on it but on the engine nothing....

I've also checked my 'other' 4/4....the engine number is apparently 711M 6015 BA according to the log book 😜

Hello

So spent a bit more time doing cleaning and looking with a torch. Arwyn, I think number you quote, and that bizarrely is on your logbook, is maybe the block casting number. I say this since I have the same number on mine.

On my logbook the number is 4C12-A1771 and the number written in the original Morgan hand written ledger for my car is also the same. On a flange for bolting to the gearbox bell housing at the rear of the engine on the nearside (about same height as coolant drain plug for block, I have found stamped 4C12, but nothing else.

Does anyone else have anything stamped in the same place?

Cheers

Hello

I've got 6J16 on one block and M3 (or possibly M8) its not too clear in the location that you describe.

Both are 711M blocks.
