I'm looking at having a replacement exhaust for my all too subdued S1 which runs the original 2 x single pipe factory set up.

The Librands unit is an option but seems pretty pricey for what it is once fitted, although many seem very happy with it.

I am looking at a well known custom exhaust fabricator & will probably go for a side exit set up, & the specialist kindly offering to make up the new silencers & temporarily fit downward pointing twin exit pipes for me to do a test drive in & make sure I'm happy before he makes the cuts in the running boards. If it's not as I hope, he'll simply extend it to 2 x twin rear exits.

To me this seems like a good plan with an escape option. The specialist is well known and is in Basildon, Essex, so you'll probably know who he is (not sure about the policy of directly naming suppliers on here). H&S anyone used these guys before & able to offer any encouragement? The other option is an outfit near Bristol (Never Ending, no prizes for guessing who), but they are quite a long way from me

Any thoughts & reassurance on my choice of fabricator would be welcome. Fitted costs will be less that half of the Librands option

Hi, When I had my aero 8 s3 I went to a local exhaust manufacturer (where the young ones go for the big exhausts!!).
I had him remove the rear section which includes the two rear silencers, he then made me a pair of straight through rear sections with a twin polished stainless tailpipe on each side, this gave the car more low down grunt on starting and a lovely growl when accelerating without being too noisy.
I had him use the original mounting points and I kept the original silencers and fittings so it could be put back to standard if required.
I was put off from side exits as they are right by your ear, I did not want to have to use ear defenders as this would spoil the sound of the V8, also as you have exit pipes both sides of the car the true V8 sound is lost.
When travelling long distances a loud exhaust can be tiring (I used to ride a loud Harley) so I found that the rear exits gave the best sound for my use.
Each to their own though, try and see what suits you, but as you say lots cheaper than the Librands set up.

if you do a search on this forum you will see quite a discussion on exhausts and in particular the pros and cons of side exhausts. For my sins I went for twin outlet side exhausts a while ago by Infinity for around £500 all in and they are very good!

I have virtually decided on the twin side exit set up, having read the exhaust thread some while ago, & see the differing opinions.

I guess I quite like the dramatic look of the twin site exits,& the more purposeful sound, my only concern is whether it is going to be so loud that you need ear defenders most of the time, or whether that might only be the case at high revs, say on a track. Can you advise your experience in this respect please.

I think I am getting seduced by the promise of it sounding like an AMG Merc....., but in truth I simply want the car to sound better than a stock 745 BMW

Side exits for me give the impression that the engine isn't firing on all 8 as you predominantly hear only one bank.

Also you will have a big void under the rear of your car with the pipes missing

I have been today to an exhaust place that lightsphere used, they reckon that removing the big middle silencers under the running boards, putting straight through pipes there, and leaving the back ones (similar to exbiker approach) will create a good job ... I have provisionally booked the S1 in for Friday week for the surgery!
