I used to love real ales but am increasingly finding them bland in the extreme. To counter this I've started a migration to American style IPAs. Try Brew Dog's Punk Ale or Camden Brewery"s IPA. I also love Belgian beers particularly Abbye brewed.

So many good tips here I doubt I'll live long enough to try them all. I grew up on bloody awful Australian chemical beer. I won't mention the brands but you know them. I only realised my lack of education when, one winters evening, in a tiny village in Bavaria G and I visited the local restaurant and I ordered a local beer. Heaven in a glass! The best beer I have ever tasted and whenever we drive through Germany we make this village our stopover.

I can't admit this to my aussie mates and family but I have learnt to appreciate and enjoy the local ales (generally dismissed as warm beer by aussies) around the UK. There is taste that can be tasted and the alcohol content is relatively low.

So it's good beer from the tap, aussie red wine, Austrian white wine and in the depths of winter a pear schnaps.

It used to irritate me when my late mother used to say ! I can't eat cheese/ cucumber / tomatoes etc" so when some 20 years ago I started having stomach problems with mass produced beers, I wondered if I was being neurotic. What could be in them to cause problems? Anyway the answer was to switch to cider and thats what I drink these days, and indeed drank when I first tasted alcohol. As I mentioned elswhere I went on a tour of a microbrewery last week and the head brewers description of what ingredients they used when he worked for one of the majors gave me a plausible reason for why I cant drink mass produced beer but can happily drink micro brewery beer brewed the traditional non chemical way.

I dont like wine - always thought it was wildly over rated. Occasional G&T but otherwise its decent cider. Like the OP I reckon Rattler is good.

The Bavarian beer is very tasty, Auster, I grew up in the Sauerland, Westphalia, where Veltins and Warsteiner Pilsener are at home. But when I'm back home from a hard day's work I enjoy this local Cologne Kölsch. Best in small 0.33 litres out of the bottle.

I had a couple of bottle of the Morgan brew a week or so back. Particularly liked the bottle of Aero.

Any real ale - which one is a function of the time of day and with/ without food.

Disagree with Phil Royle - Nottingham (not Derby) is the real ale capital of the country with Castle Rock and Alcazar Breweries + a few others.

Wine - and which one is again a function of food. Love a really full bodied Cabernet Sauvignon as well as many dessert wines.

Whiskey - Malt and Peety but trying to work my way round them all.

Gin - You cannot beat a craft Gin - and there are dozens to choose from. Burleigh Gin is a really good local one.

Although they do white wines, we are rather partial to their red desert wine: www.pellericewine.com/products-cab-franc.html Canadian ice wines are excellent and are worth exploring.

Regarding beers, I started my drinking career with Hook Norton Ales and still like them, Our local Majestic wines stocks this and it works for me, especially as I don't like the high alcohol bombs that many micro breweries produce: www.hooky.co.uk/product/bottled-beers/hooky-abv-35.ashy

Trust you enjoy getting back in harness Stuart, but can I say that on the wine front you need to get into food and wine pairings. wine

Primarily red wine for me, that and malt whisky, often of the peaty and smoky variety but generally have a fairly eclectic taste in such things. Beers tend to be of the IPA style but not the extra strong ones that so many micro breweries seem bent on producing. Never really developed a taste for gin but on my last trip to the west coast of Ireland I did bring my parents back a bottle of Dingle Gin which was apparently very good but must admit that the main attraction had been the tag line that it was made from local berries and botanicals.
