I have been MOT testing for over 15 years and have seen many vehicles with the shutz type product applied. i often see them a year later ( next mot) and am shocked how little the think black goo has done to stop corrosion or protect against it. The dinitrol product ( which is much more expensive) lasts/works so much better.
Underbody shutz product is widely used within the trade and often used to cover lots of nasties - its very cost effective too as it covers well. Its just not as good as other products at doing the job. its often sprayed over surface rust which it doesn't cure - just peels off a few months later as the rust continues its work. Dinitrol doesn't seem to peel off. I don't sell the stuff - just spend my days looking at the underside of vehicles.
If you want the best protection for your car you'd be best off avoiding shutz IMO. You get what you pay for.
PS. I think the Morgan factory use Dinitrol on new cars for protection.

"Sprayed over surface rust" is the key phrase here, anything covering up rust and not dealing with it is surely a bodge? Simon

Indeed it is - and that is what the stuff is sometimes used to do - in such situations other products are much better.

Appreciate the comments and the debate. Disappointed the Morgan needs it considering it spends most of its time garaged.Going to see for myself later, the workshop describes the underneath as 'looking a bit sad' so not sure the extent of the problem.

Tuftie...what year/mileage is you car? "A bit sad" could mean anything! If there is any rust then make sure it is sorted properly not just a "makeover"! Hopefully the chassis will be ok or just needing small jobs. It could be a decision to be made re decent refurb/repair. Nipping things in the bud now could prove a good option. Schutz is good when properly applied over sound areas. I use Dinitrol on my Mog in aerosol form and am very happy with it. I have a Shutz gun/compressor but not used Schutz for a long time. It was a mainstay when I was young and helping my dad on cars as a coachbuilder. Masking off areas is a MUST. Dinitrol wipes off with white spirit. Good luck!

I went down to the garage yesterday and had a good look around while it was up on the ramp. I don't have any ramps etc at home so don't usually see it from that angle. It wasn't as bad as feared no actual rust except some 'dust' that could be brushed off. It did look tired though as did the wood so agreed to do it based on the theory that it is preventative measures. Hopefully when it comes to resale any prospective customer will take it as that i.e. looking after the car rather than thinking its hiding nasties.

You could always take some photographs before and after. It would be no guarantee for a future purchaser but it could help alleviate any concerns.

agree with sospan... nothing wrong with Schutz if its used over good clean panels , awful stuff if its used to cover up things not to be seen like rust. It was never designed for that.
My AH has it under wheel arches and floor pans etc but not on the chassis, that's painted. Thinner stuff like dinitrol is inside cavities etc
I think its a case of using products for what they were intended. Schutz is a good sound insulator too.
