I agree with Lord Tebbit in that he was a coward and murderer .
He will not be in Heaven ,more likely in Hell with a bit of luck his pal Adams will join him soon .

To my eyes McGuinness was a ruthless murderer who became part of the peace process, which could never have happened without some of the men of violence getting on board. It turns my stomach some of the things which had to be done to achieve the peace, such as releasing convicted murderers, but it was necessary for the greater good. The only bit I'm struggling with these days is the continuing persecution of service personnel for what went on, while the page has been turned on all the terrorist atrocities.

Thank you for saving me the trouble of writing what I was going to write.

I have a business contact in Belfast whom I have to visit from time to time, she is English by birth, her husband is Northern Irish by birth and is a member of the security forces, when we have lunch any mention of the 'situation' in the province is conducted in a hushed voice - even today. Good riddance to him.

I understand, and to a certain extent share your sentiments, but I think a more pragmatic approach is required. Jonathan Powell (who was right at the centre of the peace negotiations) made the following point.

"...a return to a majoritarian system of government in Northern Ireland is unlikely, at least until the province has moved beyond sectarian politics. That means there is no obvious way out of the stalemate now facing the parties, and indeed it may actually suit Sinn Féin and the DUP to return to grievance politics for the foreseeable future rather than to agree to form a stable government. If so, McGuinness has left us at a very untimely moment.

He managed to keep the system together while he was alive".

(for the whole article, which I think is rather good... https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...riday-agreement )

Maybe but McGuiness wasnt a freedom fighter in anyones book but his own. You have to differentiate what you do to gain independance in an open democratic society like ours where referendums are possible and allowed with what you might have to do in a banana republic or somewhere like China.

The IRA only took to the gun in norniron because they knew they couldnt win a referendum. That makes them murderers by any measure. They were trying to use terror and chaos to force union against majority wishes. Thats not freedom for the majority is it?

It has been reported that when he met the queen he asked how she was. "Still alive" was her reply...

There were so many stabbings, kneecappings, tortures, bombings. The fate of those two signallers who accidentally drove into the wrong area and were stabbed and shot... I'm afraid I cannot fête him as a saint.
