Frank, were the ends of your stays turned down or are they the same diameter right to the end where you fitted the suckers?

The pair that have gone up to Andy (John Worral, HoE supply) had the top ends turned (milled?) a millimetre or so in order to fit into the space in the bonnet spring/catch. No digi camera to photograph it...

Equally - Very Good Ivo. Particularly as I was only 'monkeying' about myself.

The rod ends were straight Graham and unfortunately the suckers were oversized so I had to wrap the ends with the black tape to get then to fit on tight.

I saw Sid's post earlier and probably would have used his method but trying to source the parts was a pain so when I saw this one on ebay for £27.50 it removed the hassle.

(its like I am trying to find some narrow strip spring steel or plastic rod and 2cm binding to fabricate a Foldaway Wind Stopper using the MG Wind Stopper repair fabric I bought. The only thing so far could be an electricians 'pull through' )

I would have preferred the turned over end type to fit through the Spring like Sids but the rods are not long enough to reach the front catches if I was to do that to them. Equally I probably would not have been able to neatly bend the rod and at he correct angle for the base bend.

I notice that Sid uses the same front catch as mine but is using the adhesive strip which I thought may fail so I made the plates and pop riveted it to the plate before screwing to the car. The supplier sent a spare one which made me think 'Ha Ha' (then sods law - I dropped that one on the shed floor never to be seen again???)

If any part of my one fails than I will have to think again.

How about a straightened wire coat hangar? Can also be reshaped when you need to break in to the tin top

Perhaps Andy could send you a photo of the stainless front retainers as supplied with the HoE kit (and very similar ones fitted to RTA).

On the set I got from John W I had to mill the ends a little more to get them to fit into the spring catches. As to length, I use mine with the rear bonnet catches- seems to work well and that way they are, of course, supporting the heavier 'end' of the bonnet halves

John W's stays are designed to go at the after end of the bonnets - the fitting instructions place them as you say Gerwyn. I didn't check whether the ones that have gone to Andy fitted the spring catches - they look the same size as those fitted to RTA (but I could be wrong - alternatively, maybe RTA has larger springs? )

Just going to check the weather etc. for tomorrow - probably going to join OffaMog's trip - could do with a good drive out in RTA and Llandrindod Wells seems to fit the bill!
