Many urban limits are unrealistic, especially 20mph ones, [if you can't think of any, I would be more than happy to show you some in my area].

The only reason we have 20 mph speed limits, and we have some near us, is that arrogant, know it all drivers will not stick to the 30mph speed limit. Admittedly it is a chore to adhere to 20mph a BMW up my rear end helps me to comply.

And for similar reasons, the areas covered by lower 30/40/50 zones have extended their coverage over recent years...
I can think of one friend who has no concept of why a 30 limit exists, nor sticks to it...
Been a few years since I've seen him though, so maybe he has too many points to be able to drive ...

Makes me think of the story which was (wrongly) attributed to Australian General Peter Cosgrove. It is clearly apocryphal, and has been circulated in various versions, but I love the logic behind it.

General Cosgrove was interviewed on the radio recently. You’ll love his reply to the lady who interviewed him concerning guns and children. Regardless of how you feel about gun laws you gotta love this! This is one of the best comeback lines of all time. It is a portion of an ABC interview between a female broadcaster and General Cosgrove who was about to sponsor a Boy Scout Troop visiting his military headquarters.

FEMALE INTERVIEWER:
So, General Cosgrove, what things are you going to teach these young boys when they visit your base?

GENERAL COSGROVE:
We’re going to teach them climbing, canoeing, archery and shooting.

FEMALE INTERVIEWER:
Shooting! That’s a bit irresponsible, isn’t it?

GENERAL COSGROVE:
I don’t see why, they’ll be properly supervised on the rifle range.

FEMALE INTERVIEWER:
Don’t you admit that this is a terribly dangerous activity to be teaching children?

GENERAL COSGROVE:
I don’t see how. We will be teaching them proper rifle discipline before they even touch a firearm.

FEMALE INTERVIEWER:
But you’re equipping them to become violent killers.

GENERAL COSGROVE:
Well, Ma’am, you’re equipped to be a prostitute, but you’re not one, are you?

Now you are using the same argument as my wife - set the speed limit 10 mph lower than you really think it should be, except, there are people like Grahams lost friend, who will not obey any limit, what would you do to help those people see the light?

Hehe,

Believe me Paul, I have tried! smile
Unfortunately, that "reduce by 10 mph" seems to be the way the authorities think.
Sadly, a number of drivers are unable to think of potential consequences of inappropriate speed. While my pal's car may be capable, there's no guarantee he is smile
Mind you, as he was happy to point out at one stage, he is not the one who rear-ended a JCB (in the dark)... At least I know my limitations at night and point blank refuse distant commute if required by my employer. That's another story altogether.

You get a very different perspective as a pedestrian or walker. In the urban environment, drivers think they own the road and I would like to see more 20 limits and more pedestrianisation.

When walking/rambling (I hate the term ramblers), many drivers are quite happy to squeeze through at ridiculous speeds.
Once in Salcombe, an intolerant old fart in a Mercedes actually knocked my arm as he couldn't wait. His face said it all.
