I have now fitted the 195/65 R15 Michelin CrossClimate tyres. They are a good option for me as by law in certain parts of Northern Italy we must have certified winter tyres or carry chains from 1st November to 30th April.

The 65 profile tyres have a sidewall of 195 x 65% = 126 mm (10mm more than the 60 profile tyres). Your 185/70 R15 tyres will have a sidewall of 185 x 70% = 129 mm so will give you good ground clearance (for a Plus 4, that is)

A 6" rim is the maximum width for that tyre and will probably lower the overall height a fraction. The "Standard Rim Size" for the 185/70 R15 tyre is 5.00" x 15"

By the way the Vredestein Sprint Classic 185/70 R15 89 H are very well thought of in this tyre size and are not too expensive.

I ordered my (still to be built) car with 16" wire wheels, therefore it will probably be on 205 width tyres. I testdrove a car on 15" wheels, which I really liked on country roads.
Reading this topic makes me feel I've made a mistake...

Is the only possibility of reducing tyre width switching to other wheels?

From my experience, a Plus 4 on Roadster wheels is over tyred for the performance. If you have time to reconsider before build Thomas, then think hard. Once it's built you can't easily reduce the wheel width.
Plus 4 is 6"x15". Roadster is 7"x16".

I agree with Dave. The tyres on a 16" wheel will also be lower in profile. Fine on a race track but low profile tyres usually have a harsher ride and are more prone to damage to the tyre and/or rim when a pothole is hit.

I would be annoyed at the fee for changing the spec but now is the time to think seriously about it before the car goes in to production. In fact changing to narrower 15" wheels may not cost you much as the difference in price will balance, in good part, the fee for changing the spec. Certainly changing after you have the car, unless you can make a satisfactory deal with your dealer, will be more expensive and in the end may look odd because of the extra width of the mudguards which will be cut to cover the wider tyres.

I'll talk to my dealer and check their opinion on this.
The risk of tyre damage or a harsher ride is not too much of a concern to me (mostly rather smooth roads here). However, heavy steering / less nimble handling would be a serious downside.

picked up the car with the new tyres, im pleased with the look and they seem to hold the road as good as previous tyres,
slightly softer ride i would say, tyre is larger diametre so speedo now reads spot on according to sat nav reading,

To my mind they really suit the car.
