It's true that Smart meters reduce the measuring and billing costs for suppliers, and they will be able to reflect that in their tariffs.
I like your sense of humour! So you think electricity suppliers wouldn't use the opportunity to charge people more if they can get away with it? It's not that smart tariffs will be cheaper than standard, it's that non-smart tariffs will be more expensive than standard. If I provide you with a service that is more expensive than that which I normally provide, of course I'm going to charge you more for it. Why wouldn't I?

Last year the man from British Gas came to fit smart meters to the gas - we already had one on electrics which worked well. However - he had to replace them both so that they could "talk to each other"!.
When fitted about 3 hours later he said we were indicating a lot of electricity being used. I said that was unusual as normally in daytime we tick over on the solar panels. He then asked why he had not been told there were solar panels (they are bloody great big things on the roof - but hey! . He asked why we had not mentioned it when we booked over the phone - I replied that we booked online & there was no such question about solar panels which he agreed. He then said at present smart meters could not work woith solar panels so he removed them again and fitted new non-smart (stupid?) meters.
The British Gas website for booking now asks about solar panels & says at present they cannot fit smart meters where solar panels are fitted - but they are working on the problem and as soon as it is sorted they will let us know - I am not holding my breath!

This is an extract from Smart Energy GB web site: Can I get a smart meter if I have solar panels? Yes you can get a smart meter if you have solar panels. Your bills will reflect the energy you are using and that you have generated yourself. Your in-home display will only show how much energy you are buying from your supplier. In the future, your in-home display may also be able to reflect the energy you’re generating yourself, such as from solar panels.

I plan to be one of the last to have one fitted. That way as the technology improves, you are likely to get the best options for the consumer. This is a good strategy. They've only just got the data network operating properly, and many of the early smart meter designs and protocols are a bit pants. The problem the suppliers have got is that the politicians set them unrealistically ambitious targets for smart meter installations so that had to get cracking rushing out meter installs. I think it's fair to say that the management of such massive projects has proved not to be without its challenges either. There have been loads of problems reported so far, with dodgy cell phone coverage, poor meter designs, lack of co-operation across the industry, and poor meter installation practice. I know of at least one supplier that's had so many issues with the meter installers (outsourced, subcontracted) doing a poor job that they've started fitting them with body cams so they can check the job has been done right. When it is all sorted, it'll be fine, but it'll be a year or two yet...

I stand corrected in theory, but i can't see that the export fees will change on the basis that there is no joined up thinking at E.ON. Also if the SM is doing this then i would be entitled to see the export meter, wouldn't I? But this is not part of the home display so i doubt if it has been designed in, despite the intention.

When it is all sorted, it'll be fine, but it'll be a year or two yet... There is only one network that covers our home, Vodafone and where the meters are it is 2 blobs of 2G.... If they need more bandwidth and cannot use EiFi then I'll be in for a long wait....
