I used this phrase in a conversation with my nephew ( 25 year old) this week and he looked at me as if I was a Martian! Took me ten minutes to explain

'68 mini was +ve earth so never got radio to work but tape player was double insulated... other add ons included paddy hopkirk gas pedal for heel and toeing, stick-on regn plate on bonnet, drilled floor to let rain water out, even had a crook-lock in the vain hope that someone might try to steal it

Any one had the same first car as me?

If I may interject no the MR2 mk2 was not the wedge shaped one, it was the middle iteration with the softer lines, the 2litre engine and the propensity to swop ends.

I had a mk1 MR2 when they first came out, I bought the dealers demo for £10,950 in 1985 (my Mum nearly had a heart attack) however don't drink don't smoke had to spend my money somewhere and I thought I was the bees knees. It was a baby Ferrari and the 1.6 16v engine from the corrolla twin cam was a peach. Taught me a bit about how a car handles and weight distribution also but could be drifted if you were careful, nothing like it's successor.

And finally, no Robert it did not use the same pressing as the X19 I think that was just a rumour at the time. There were a few similarities in looks but that's all.

Sister's first car was a Clubman Estate. Wind up windows, 1100cc as far as I remember. Used to borrow it a lot ('cos the Land Rover was expensive for long trips. So was the Mini if driven hard!).

I'd have another trad Mini, surprising how much one could get in the back of the estate...

Also, I missed the Mk2 comment - it was the Mk1 I was talking about. The Mk2 was better looking but I felt the Mk1 had more style and character; the Mk3 was just a mess (imho).

I love the MK1 plenty of character!

Whilst I never owned one, I always lusted after the Mk1, Mk2 and Mk3 Mazda RX-7. I often find myself looking at the classifieds for a Mk3 RX-7, unmodified (the difficult part), that I could be tempted to buy.

The Mk1 was the lightest. One of the few cars I wish I had not sold. The later models, like just about every other car became too portly (says the 'stout' man with a Z3! )
Fuel consumption was a bit high though...
